You Zhen - like a brother to Shan Mei. Video cameraman at MBC. Loves Yin Mei. Innocently sweet and caring.
Shan Mei - only daughter of rich family, grew up with You Zhen. Cheerful, happy and has a sweet smile.
Yin Mei - a girl with a dark past. Smart and ambitious.
Storyline:
Yin Mei's father fell in an accident in a construction site and died. Shan Mei's father took her in to live with them. Shan Mei and Yin Mei went to college together. From the start, Yin Mei was jealous of the happy and worry-free life Shan Mei had.
Yin Mei had an unhappy life. Her mother left them when she was a young girl. She became involved with all sorts of bad guys before her father died and she came to live with Shan Mei.
Shan Mei is in love with You Zhen, but You Zhen only thinks of her as a little sister. You Zhen fell in love with Yin Mei instead. Shan Mei is heartbroken and leaves for London, where she meets Xiang Tze. They become best friends. And when she came back to Korea, she went to work as a broadcaster of MBC, a major newsbroadcasting company, not knowing that Xiang Tze is the son of the family who owns MBC. Shan Mei finds out about Xiang Tze's true identity at the same time Xiang Tze confesses love for her.
Shan Mei still has lingering feelings for You Zhen, who is still with Yin Mei. But gradually Shan Mei falls in love with Xiang Tze. Meanwhile, Yin Mei is still jealous of Shan Mei and wants to steal Xiang Tze from her, and even though she really loves You Zhen, she breaks up with him and causes him much heartbreak.
Her quest to become rich and famous blinds Yin Mei to everything. She goes out after Xiang Tze because he is rich and powerful and owns the television company. She tampers with the car of a fellow reporter and causes the car to crash and the woman broke her leg.
The evidence of Yin Mei tampering with the car was caught on tape in the security monitors. You Zhen covers up for Yin Mei and erases the tape for her. He confesses he still loves her and asks her to go away with him, to start a new life together someplace else. Yin Mei refuses. And when Yin Mei's old boyfriend came at her with a knife, You Zhen tried to save Yin Mei, got hit in a truck accident and died.
Yin Mei is shattered over You Zhen's death, though she doesn't show it to anyone. She pretends to be cruel and unfeeling and gains everyone's hatred and disgust, but what she wanted was to bring shame onto herself for all her past actions, murder her ex-boyfriend, and then commit suicide and bring her shame with her forever, thus giving justice for You Zhen's death because she was responsible for it.
But before she could put her plan into action, she saw the tape You Zhen had erased for her, and saw that he had recorded a message, from him to her. He showed her footages of herself before she became consumed with jealousy and anger. He told her he wanted her to be happy. He asked her to marry him. He told her he forgave her for all that she'd done wrong in the past, and all that she'd do wrong from then on, and he wished she would forgive herself, too. Because he loved her, and he wanted her to love herself too.
After receiving You Zhen's unconditional love and forgiveness, Yin Mei lost the desire to carry out her "revenge" plan. Instead she made peace with Shan Mei and asked forgiveness from You Zhen's mother. Then she wrote a letter to Xiang Tze asking forgiveness from everyone in the company whom she'd wronged, and then she tried to kill herself.
Shan Mei and Xiang Tze found Yin Mei weeks later, in an orphanage run by nuns. She'd lost her memory, retaining only happy memories from her childhood before her mother left them. She was content to stay in the orphanage from then on, and she did receive forgiveness from everyone.
And Shan Mei and Xiang Tze? They lived happily ever after. =)
Notes:
I prefer the You Zhen - Yin Mei story. Yin Mei was a girl who had dark desires and who would stoop to crime to get what she wanted. But like any other person, she also had a weakness - and that was her love for You Zhen, who loved her unconditionally even after knowing how "evil" she was. She did love him, but for her love was not enough. Until in the end, in her quest to get all that she wanted, she destroyed the one person she really loved.
