Commander Chakotay
HIS EARLY YEARS
Chakotay is a Human Native American, from a tribe that moved to a colony world on the edge of Federation territory. He still has some relatives living on Earth, including a cousin in Ohio. He was born breach and his name was a gift from the tribe when he was born. As a teenager he journeyed with his father to the Central American Rainforest, reuniting with the other ancestors of the Rubber Tree People. His father, Kolopak, embraced the ways of their tribe, taking the traditional facial tattoo. Chakotay always refused to hunt with his father and never even learned to shoot a bow and arrow. He didn't appreciate his tribe's ways and joined Starfleet to escape, against the wishes of his father.
HERITAGE
He eventually came to respect and follow the ways of his tribe. After his father died, Chakotay chose to wear a facial tattoo to honor his father, who had one and had worn it to honor their tribe. The tattoo was actually first worn by the "Sky Spirits", which he later found out to be aliens from the Delta Quadrant that had visited his Native American ancestors.
Chakotay regularly contacts his animal guide, whom he believes helps him seek the way in his life. His personal animal guide is a female and is not a bear, but it hasn't been revealed what type of animal it actually is. According to his beliefs, everyone has an animal guide and he has helped Kathryn and B'Elanna find theirs. He has also helped Neelix on a vision quest, in search of answers in his life. In searching for animal guides or venturing on vision quests a medicine bundle is required. Chakotay's bundle includes a blackbird's wing, a stone from the river, and his akoonah machine. The akoonah is a device that simulates the effects of psychoactive herbs. In Chakotay's own vision quests he often speaks to the spirit of his father, seeking guidance and counsel.
He has been taught how to have lucid dreams, in which he knows that he is dreaming and is able to take control of the dream. Chakotay is able to wake himself by tapping his hand three times while in a lucid dream. Another tribal custom he follows is the use of the medicine wheel. It is a wall hanging with magnetic stones to be placed on it in an effort to guide his spirit if he is injured and incapacitated. Both B'Elanna and the Holodoc have been taught to use it.
STARFLEET
Captain Hikaru Sulu personally sponsored Chakotay into Starfleet Academy. In his first year at the Academy he trained as a pilot in North America. Chakotay completed further pilot training on Venus in learning how to handle atmospheric storms and dodged asteroids for a semester in "the belt". He failed temporal mechanics at the Academy, but did graduate. He was in Starfleet for several years, and was even involved in the first contact with the Tarkannans. The experience did not fair well for him because he inadvertently "propositioned" the Tarkannan leader and almost was sent back to the Academy for remedial training. He enjoys first contact situations and attempts to be very respectful of other cultures.
THE MAQUIS
Several years after joining Starfleet, Chakotay found himself torn between his obligations to the Federation and his desire to help his tribe. The Cardassians claimed the Federation colony his tribe lived on, and the Federation signed a treaty that allowed it. His tribe fought against the Cardassians, banding with other colonies also overtaken by the oppressive Cardassian rule. The colonies formed the Maquis, and Chakotay's father fought with them. The Federation and Starfleet would not help the colonies, and that led to significant difficulties for Chakotay as a Starfleet officer. The Maquis were considered to be outlaws and wanted criminals by both the Federation and the Cardassians. When his father died fighting the Cardassians, Chakotay decided to resign his Starfleet commission and take up his father's fight. Sveta was the name of his Maquis recruiter. He was in the Maquis for a few years and had become the leader of a Maquis ship. That ship was swept into the Delta Quadrant from the Badlands near Deep Space Nine. The Maquis ship was destroyed and the Maquis joined Voyager's crew in an effort to find a way back to the Alpha Quadrant. When Voyager made contact with the Alpha Quadrant, he was very distressed to hear the Maquis had all been killed or imprisoned.
He has been a mentor to B'Elanna and was a leading factor in her becoming Chief Engineer of Voyager. They had been in the Maquis together and he grew to have a great amount of faith in her abilities. Tom had also been in the Maquis and served under Chakotay's command. Chakotay did not like Tom, a fact that was tempered when Tom risked his life to save him on Ocampa. Tuvok had gone undercover, posing as a Maquis and had served with Chakotay. Seska served in the Maquis as well, and had been romantically involved with him. She manipulated Chakotay and was later revealed to be a Cardassian spy, an enemy of the Maquis. After she left Voyager, Seska stole some of Chakotay's DNA in hopes of impregnating herself, however she became pregnant by a Kazon.
FIRST OFFICER OF VOYAGER
Chakotay was asked by Kathryn to become Voyager's first officer and given the rank of Commander. He accepted, again wearing the uniform with pride. He had already earned the respect of his former Maquis crewmembers and easily gained the trust of the Starfleet crew. Chakotay is responsible for the entire crew and ship, and as First Officer, will replace Kathryn if need be. In an alternate future seen only by Kes, he became Captain after Kathryn was killed in a Krenim attack. His additional duties as First Officer include crew discipline and duty assignments. He is familiar with all Bridge duty stations (Tactical, Ops, and Helm) and takes over for the duty officer if they are called away from their station. Although he trained as a pilot, Chakotay has been responsible for numerous shuttle crashes.
INTERESTS
Chakotay is a creative man, making sand pictures, etching on rocks, and making items like headboards and log cabins. He even made a bathtub for Kathryn (”Resolutions”). He enjoys skiing and losing hoverball games to B'Elanna. He has also lost numerous games of gin to Tuvok. B'Elanna claims he has a very twisted sense of humor. Chakotay does regular segments on Neelix's audiovisual news program commending outstanding crewmembers. He is a vegetarian and his favorite foods are mushroom soup and corn salad. Chakotay hates carrots and warm milk, refuses to eat pudding because it is slimy, and fried foods upset his stomach. Archeology is one of his primary interests. His unusual skills include making water purifying solar stills from a uniform and making a fire by rubbing two sticks together with hair as kindling. Chakotay also gives great neck rubs, as his mother and Kathryn will attest to.
RELATIONSHIPS
Chakotay's respect and friendship with Kathryn grew and he has revealed possible romantic feelings for her. They had been left by Voyager to live out their lives on a planet that shielded them from the effects of a deadly disease when he told her. His feelings seemed to continue for a while, with him even being protectively angry at Q wanting to mate with Kathryn. He doesn’t appear to be pursuing a relationship with Kathryn. Since that time he had an intimate encounter with a female former Borg, Riley Frazier. Chakotay had wanted her to come with Voyager to the Alpha Quadrant but she was unwilling to leave her new home and life. Without the memories of their shared love, Kellin chose to return to her world and again Voyager's crew had their memories wiped of the incident. However, before Chakotay lost the memories he wrote it all down on paper, hoping to hold on to the cherished times.
Chakotay claims to have found a greater peace than he's ever known before, now that he is on Voyager. He loyally stands by Kathryn's side as First Officer, and his commitment to the crew could not be greater.
