Anime Fanfic Index
There are three major criteria I use to evaluation fanfiction. First is writing style, or the authors mastery of the written word. This includes the ability to write dialogue, orchestrate a fight scene and basically bring the story to life. Second is storycraft, or conception of an idea. This also includes creating a supporting framework of plot and theme. Third is story development, the author's decisions in how the story is told. This involves the choice of perspectives, the pacing and in general the author's editing (this does not mean spellchecking).
Fanfics are judged on a three point scale with each criteria being worth a point each in half point increments. 3.0 point fanfics should be considered required reading and are a good entry point into new anime series. 2.0 point fanfics are worth the time and are recommended reading. 1.5 point fanfics are substandard and for diehard fans only. Although sometimes enjoyable, I do not recommend these fanfics. Sadly there are fanfics out there that I would rate 0.0 point. They compose about 75% of fanfiction.net with 0.5-1.5 composing another 20%.

The Snow Raven
Ruroni Kenshin. Alternate point of view.
Vengeance and a Half
Crossover of Ranma 1/2 and Sailor Moon. Dark and action.
