Shields beat Merchants 13-12 in winners bracket finals, Myron
Reinhardt was 4-5, HR, double, 4 RBIs. Also leading Shields attack were
Ted Stegeman (3-5, 3 doubles), John Henry (3-5), Al Rinehard (3-5, HR,
2B and 4 RBIs) and Don Heilman (double, triple, 3 RBIs). The Merchants
came back and beat Wolfs Cafe of Cincinnati 6-1 in the losers bracket
final to get another crack at the Kentucky squad. Sheilds then beat
Pittsburgh 13-1 in the Championship game. Myron Reinhardt's HR and 4
RBIs led the way for Shields to capture the very first ASA Slow Pitch
National Championship. Shields pitcher Roland Vorhees gave up only 5
hits and one run. Al Rinehard (2 Doubles) and Bo Stuntebeck each had three hits in
the title clincher. Most of the teams entered were from the Ohio River
Valley and Northern Kentucky. For the Merchants, Mike Sabbio was 4-8
with a HR and 3 RBIs in the final two games Pittsburgh played, both
losses to Shields. Shield's finished the season with a 45-3
record.

Waldeck's Tavern won 6 straight games to capture the title,
outscoring their opponents 82-36 along the way. They
defeated Peerless Woolens of Georgia 32-7 in the winners bracket final
behind the hitting of Jerry Huber, Fred Heimkreiter
and John Drees, all of which had five hits. Drees getting a couple
homers. Waldecks collected 38 hits
in the contest. Waldeck's then sat back and waited as last years
runner-up, Pittsburgh National Fruit eliminated
defending champs, Shields Contractors 5-4 and then disposed of Peerless
Woolens 15-11 in the losers bracket final to get back to the finals. Waldeck’s Tavern
proved to be too strong as it won final 13-7 hitting 8 HRs. John Drees
went 4 for 4 and
hit 4 straight homers while Frank Hiemkrieter, Jim Trainor, Bob Trainor,
and Frank Kramer each had 1 to back the pitching of Malio Valvano (Valvano
surrendered only 31 runs in 6 games for Waldeck).
Drees ended the tournament getting 9 straight hits, including 6
HRs. Pittsburgh pitcher Tony Bova had 2 home runs in a losing cause for the
Fruit Merchants. Mike Sabbio and Bruce Gilbert also hit HR for
Pittsburgh. James Caldwell of Shields went 13-18 to lead the
tournament in hitting. Ralph Bo Stuntebeck, delayed due to work
commitments, only played the last two games for Shields, yet still made
the All Tournament team as he went 6-9 with 3 HRs and 2 doubles. Donnie
Key of the Louisville Stars started the tournament with 8 straight hits,
before going 2-4 with 2 HRs in the third game.

Lang's Pet Shop defeated Tresler Comets 6-1 in the winners
bracket final and watched as the Comets beat Rhodes-Garden Club of
Pennsylvania 11-5. Rhodes had previously eliminated last year's champ,
Waldeck's Tavern by a 13-6 score. The Tresler Comets then eliminated
Rhodes-Garden 5-1 to get another crack at Lang's. The Comets defeated
Lang's 7-6 behind the big bat of Jack Carmichael and then forced another
game. Lang's prevailed in the final championship game 19-13. Paul Zembrodt was 3-4 with a triple, 2 HRs and 5 RBIs for Lang's. Ralph Bo
Stuntebeck, Jack Nie and Gene Dittoe (2B, 3B, HR, 3 RBIs), also collected 3 hits
apiece. Bill Zeigler smacked a 3-run homer to chip in for Lang's. Ed Reuter
(HR, 4 RBIs) and Art Merten (3B, 3 RBIs) led Tresler with 3 hits each.
Jack Carmichael added 2 more hits, including a double and 2 RBIs to
complete an outstanding tournament performance. Lang's pitcher Tom
Infield won 5 straight including the winner's bracket final giving up
only 9 runs, he hurled 3 consecutive 1-Run games to the King Seat.
The Comets played in the same league as Shields, Waldecks and the
Cincinnati Firefighters. Lang's ended the season with a 40-5
record.

Gatliff Auto beat West End Merchants from Jefferson
County (Louisville Area) Kentucky 5-0 in the
winners bracket final behind the shutout pitching of Vern Roberts.
Defending champ Lang's Pet Shop lost it's first game to Pittsburgh's Dormont Boosters 5-4 and stormed through the losers bracket winning 6
straight games then eliminating the West End Merchants of Jefferson
County-Louisville, KY 9-6 for their
seventh straight win and advanced to the finals. Malio Valvano pitched
all the games for Langs. They had to defeat Gatliff's twice to win the title. Gatliff pitcher Vern Roberts
made sure that didn't happen as Gatliff's dethroned Lang's 2-1 in
Championship game. Vern Roberts helped his cause getting a hit and scoring a
run. Lou Smith had a big Sac Fly for Gatliff's to score Gene Dittoe and Bill Bieger chipped
in with 2 hits. For Langs, Earl Berryman and Bo Stuntbeck both had
doubles, with Berryman scoring the only run for Langs. Vern Roberts had 2
shutouts and surrendered only 17 runs in 5 games. Gatliff finished
the season with only 3 defeats the entire year ... all to Lang's.
Gatliff's 1956 record was 34-3 and Lang's finished up at 30-3

Gatliffs started out winning five straight games including the
winners bracket final. Vern Roberts won the first three games, Tom
Imfeld won the fourth, then Roberts came back to win the winners bracket
final to make Gatliffs the only undefeated team. McAdenville pounded out 20 hits, including 5 HRs (Bill Campo,
Mason Leeper, Harold Helton, Red Jenkins and Carroll Beale) while
defeating Lotus Club of Pittsburgh 18-12 in the losers bracket final.
Then
they came back and defeated ace hurler Vern Roberts and unbeaten Gatliffs 13-10 in the
first championship game. Gatliff's came back with Tom Imfeld pitching
again and won the final game 8-4. Myron Reinhardt
started off the hitting barrage with a 2-run homer in the first inning.
Three straight home runs followed off the bats of Dan Heilman, Ralph Bo Stutebeck and Alex Burhart.
Reinhardt later added another home run. He finished the last game 2-3
with 2 HRs, 3 RBIs and 2 Runs scored. Red Jenkins pitched all 7 games
for McAdenville. Vern Roberts finished the tournament with a 4-1
pitching record. In a word of note, Frank Matoh of Sheffield Bronze set a
tournament record by hitting 4 consecutive Home Runs in one game during
Sheffield's 19-7 win over the Staten Island Stoppers of NYC.

the strength of Frank Panski's 2 triples, a home run and 4 RBIs.
accounting for half the teams runs. East Side had just defeated
Helf Builders 17-7 on the strength of home runs by Panski, Joe Gauci and
George Banchui. Sheffield
advanced to the championship game by defeating Boone's Bar of Kentucky 10-1 as Ron Annotico hit a pair of
3-Run HRs for Sheffield. In the Championship game, East Side Sporting Goods beat
Sheffield 7-4. George
Corona of East Side pitched the victory, hit 2 HRs and added 4 RBIs to
lead the Detroit squad to the title George Branchui chipped in with a
solo HR for good measure. Corona led the East Side
bats in both homers and batting average. East Side's Joe Gauci, who
played the season with Sox's Inn and was a pickup for East Side for the
National Tournament
helped the defense turn multiple double plays from his short fielder
position. East Side went 6-0 in the tournament. The Detroit squad won
their first game rather easily over Staten Island Stape Darts 7-1. They
then came from behind and defeated Dapper Dan's of PA 6-5 on a walk off
Home Run by pinch-hitter Carl Cantinella. The next game saw the
same situation as Detroit defeated defending champ, Gatliff Auto of KY.
Gatliffs had 17 hits in the game, but only 6 runs, due to the defense of
the Detroiters who turned six double plays in the game. With the game
tied at six, going into the bottom of the 10th inning, two outs and
third basemen Phil Gallo came to bat. He got a hold of one of Vern
Robert's pitches and when it landed on the other side of the left field
fence, the East Side team had done it again. Defending Champion, Gatliff
Auto Sales came into the National Tournament with a 28-1 record, but
finished 7th with a 3-2 record.

Yorkshire won their first two games, then lost to Grande-Caruso of
PA 11-2. They then won the next seven straight games behind the pitching
of Walt Wherry, who only surrendered 27 runs in the final 7 games of the
tournament.
In the losers bracket semi final, Yorkshire came back to win in dramatic
fashion as Don Rardin's 3 run homer late in the game, beat Sheffield
Bronze 3-2. They then got their revenge on the Grande-Caruso squad with a 6-4 win in the
losers bracket final then had to defeat undefeated Duffy's twice.
Duffy's had beaten New Kensington's Grande-Caruso 8-6 as Ish Cornett's
home run with brother Al Cornett aboard iced the game in the last
inning. Yorkshire Restaurant became
the first team in the history of the Slow Pitch Nationals to come
through the
losers bracket and win the title. Yorkshire scored 81 runs and limited
their opponents to 48 Runs. The first final was over quick as
Yorkshire won 11-1. In the 10-6 final, Yorkshire jumped out to a 5-0 lead
and never looked back as Myron Reinhardt delivered a 2-run homer with Rardin aboard. This was followed by consecutive doubles by Walt Wherry
and Bill Beiger, along with singles from Coleman Arthur, Tom Kuhlman and
Ralph Champman for 3 more runs. Wherry had a single, double and a triple
in the game, while Reinhardt had a Homer and 2 singles. Yorkshire picked up Myron Reninardt and
Walt Wherry from Gatliff for the Nationals.

Hamilton Tailors had to win five straight games and did so with the
pitching
of Sam Minniti, defense of Third Baseman, Don Sawyer (who made diving
grabs to rob Sheffield of at least 4 hits).
Sheffield defeated Buckhorn Cafe of Toledo in the winners bracket final 16-7.
Hamilton Tailors came back to eliminate Buckhorn 16-5 in the semi-final
to set the stage for the championship against Sheffield Bronze. With Sam
Minniti on the mound, The Tailors defeated Sheffield twice; 12-4 and
then 17-2
to claim the title.
Bernie Roeckers was 4-5 with 2 doubles, 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs in the final
game. Sam Minniti surrendered 14 runs in the five straight wins to the
title after the loss to Sheffield. Including the 12 runs he gave up to
Sheffield in the loss, Minniti gave up just 41 runs in the 10 games. He
was 9-1 in the tournament.

Hamilton Tailors eliminated Gatliffs 11-1 behind Sam Minitti's
Pitching. Then the Tailors had to win both games in the finals to repeat as ASA
Open National Champions. Sam Minnitti pitched a
5-2 victory in the first game and also hit a 3-run homerun to win the
game in the 7th inning. Then he came back and pitched 3-hit
shutout against the powerful New York City team to clinch the
championship 2-0. Minnitti gave up only 7 total hits
in both games. He also went 7-1 overall as a pitcher and in 8 games, only gave up 22
runs, including a shutout and three 1-run games. Somehow he was not
named the MVP? Jim Harper of 4th place Ready-Mix from Knoxville was
named MVP. Minnitti was named most valuable Pitcher. Counting the 1960
Nationals where he was 9-1, Minniti had a 16-2 pitching record in the
back to back titles. Becoming only the second team to perform this feat.
Gatliffs of Kentucky won two straight in 1956 and 57. Plateau AC won its
first 5 games, defeating The Tailors along the way 9-8 to send them to
the losers bracket. Plateau's stars were Bob Beier and George O'Neill,
who both started off the tournament with 8 straight hits and Morty
Weinberg, who excelled in Short Field and hit 2 HRs also.

Paul Tomasovich electrified the crowd in his first at bat when he hit a
home run over the 30 foot high fence in right center. Detroit came back
with Bill Cole's double being the big blow to take a 4-1 lead. The Pittsburgh
crew came back in the 5th inning as Ron Kaintz and Mike Kovach both had
back-to-back run scoring singles. They both scored on Jimmy Watts'
triple tying the score at 4 each. Skips winning run came in the 6th as
Mike Orlando's double plated Billy Caye who had singled. Bimbo McKenzie
chipped in with 2 hits, including a RBI Double. The magical pitching of Lou Del Mastro
kept the Detroit bats quiet in the top of the 7th to preserve a 5-4 championship
for Skip & Hogan. John Stone of
Milwaukee set a new Home Run record with 11. Paul Tomasovich led Skip &
Hogan for the weekend (12-18, .667, with 4 doubles, 3 triples, 2 HRs and
6 RBIs). Del Mastro (9-15, .600, 4 doubles, 4 triples, while scoring 10
runs) and Kovach (9-17, . 529). Skip Hogans finished the season with a
39-6 record.

After Gatliffs had dismantled Skip Hogan's 15-2 in the winner's
bracket final, the Pittsburgh squad came back to defeat the defending
national champs, East Side Sporting Goods of Detroit 5-2 in the loser's
bracket final. This gave them another crack at Galiff's. Skip Hogan won
the first final 16-6 as they hit 6 home runs in the game. Jimmy Watts
had 2 HRs and 2 doubles, Bill Downey also had 2 homers, including 4
RBIs. Pitcher Lou DelMastro had a double, triple and a 3-run homer, good
for 5 RBIs. Ron Diulus had the other homer. After a 10
minute break, Gatliff's came out. Bob Harrison of Gatliff hit home runs
in his first two at bats, giving them a 3-0 lead. The Hogans came back
with hits from Mike Kovach and Paul Tomasovach. Joe Bull Yimin scored
them both with a double. After Ron Diulus hit a single, moving
Yimin to third, while Dilius went to second on the throw, Louie
DelMastro scored them both with a hit to make the score 4-3 in favor of
Hogan's (DelMastro collected 7 RBIs in the two championship games). In the 5th inning, Skip Hogan's made 3 errors and Bob Harrison's
base hit scored the last two runners of the inning to give Gatliff a 9-4 lead.
Tomasovich hit a 2-run HR in the 6th, but it wasn't enough as Gatliff
won the title 9-6. For Pittsburgh, Jimmy Watts had 5 HRs on the
Tournament. The legendary Myron Reinhardt was awarded the MVP
award for his clutch hitting and overall excellence and leadership.

In a National Championship that featured a couple of great
comebacks in the history of this event, Musicaro jumped out to an 11-5 lead on homers from Jim Galloway,
Oscar Steadman and Lou Russo (3 hits in that game), Zeke Sinicola also
had 3 hits for Musicaro's - everybody at the tournament thought it was
going to be a Musicaro-Gatliff championship matchup .... But, Gatliff come back in their
usual way and scored 7 runs in the 5th inning to eventually win 13-11. In the final,
Skips came came twice in the last two innings. Trailing 12-7 in the
bottom of the 6th, the Skips scored 6 runs, highlighted by Paul
Tomasovich's (Tomasovich had 2 HRs in the game) homer to give his team a
13-12 lead. Gatliffs came back with 4 runs in the top of the 7th behind
Bob Harrison's HR (That was Harrison's 3rd of the game) to take a 16-13 lead. Skips pushed
across 2 runs with a series of hits and with 2 outs, up comes George Siford of Skips
to pinch hit with with 2 runners on base. Siford hits a dramatic walk off
3- run homer to give Skips the championship 18-16 over Gatliff.
Lost in all the commotion was the incredible feat pulled off by TWUA's
Don Arndt, as he had a weekend for the ages. It was stated that he
started the tournament with 22 consecutive hits. He finished up 24-26
for a .923 average and also was the Home Run leader with 10. He was also
walked intentionally 9 times.

Skip AC won this championship in dominating fashion, with tremendous
defense and the pitching of Lou DelMastro. Skips defeated a great Swing
Inn team from Cleveland in the winner's bracket final 6-2 behind 2 home
runs from Paul Tomasovich. Swing
Inn then lost
the loser's bracket final to Gatliff's 13-5 to finish 3rd. In the
championship, that wasn't even close, Skips exploded for 9 home runs in
the 23-7 Championship Game victory. Gatliff started the scoring in the
first with Barry Norman's 3-Run HR, but Skips came back to score 4 in
the bottom of the first and then scored 9 runs in the bottom of the second
inning. Bill Downey started it off with a 3-run Homer. Jimmy Watts had a
2-run homer and Bill Hopkins and George Siford also hit homers in the
inning. Bill Hopkins, George Siford and Bill Downey all hit 2 home runs
in the game, while Jimmy Wallace, Joe 'Bull' Yimen and
Paul Tomasovich also hit home runs. Skip AC had 25 hits during the game
and their cause was helped by the fact Gatliff committed 5 errors. Ageless Myron Reinhardt hit .770
(17-22) to lead the Gatliff team, somehow, he was left off the All
America team. MVP Pitcher Lou Delmastro upped his ASA National
Championship record to 25-2 with this 7-0 performance. Skips were
26-6 in their Pittsburgh Metro League and 18-1 in tournament play for a
54-7 total record.

After losing to 2-time defending champ, Skip AC 13-5 in
their first game and then a rain delay in which more then 2 inches of
rain fell, County Sports won 10 straight games the last 31 hours to reach the finals.
Michael's Lounge, behind MVP Mike Axelson, beat Swing Inn of
Cleveland 20-4 in the winner's bracket finals and then sat back as
County Sports beat Cleveland's Swing Inn in a 18-17 slugfest behind the
home run heroics of Jim Galloway. In less than ideal conditions, Big Jim
(11 HRs) and pitcher Bill Brown (.690 batting average) led County
Sports, who scored 174 runs and gave up 87 runs in that span,
all the way back to the finals. All total, they scored 179 runs and hit
41 HRs. All those game took its toll on the Long
Islanders as Michael's Lounge defeated them 10-0 in the championship.
Michael's had 14 hits to County Sports' 3. MVP Mike Axelson went 5-5
with 3 HRs in
the Championship game to lead Michael's.

ASA started the "Regional Championships" this season. After 62 teams
entered the 1966 National and with the rain and delays, the tournament
was played throughout the night. It became too much, so the ASA divided
up the Country into 30 Regions and no longer were State and Metro Champs
guaranteed a spot in the Nationals. The Regionals brought together a
specified number of State and Metro Champs to play in that particular
Regional Championship Tournament. That winner then earned a berth to the
National Championship. The Defending Champion also had an automatic
berth at each National along with the Host Team. This cut the
number of teams down to a manageable number each year. Jim's Sports Shop started the season as Skip AC, but Jim's Sports
Shop took over the financial backing by the end of the season.
Miller "Killer" Adams of Jim's was a dominating force at
bat and in the field as Jims beat the defending champs 14-8 to win the
title.
Paul Tomasovich
hit a home run and collected 3 RBIs in the final game. Tomasovich ended
up 15-29 (.517) for the tournament. Both Ray Kruel
and Andy Zilka also had 3 RBIs. Tex Collins of Michael's hit 4 HRs against County Sports, but it took Jack Westerlund's walk off
3-run homer in the 7th inning to eliminate the Long Islanders 22-21.
Collins' effort offset great individual performances by County Sports
Jum Galloway and Bill Brown who each hit 3 homers apiece in the loss. Michael's
then went to the finals where they defeated Jim's 9-5 in the first final. Collins
hit 13 HRs to set a record, 6 straight at one point.

Bert Smith hit HRs in his first two at bats to ignite County Sports in
the Final championship game. Smith came up big the Long Island
team every game getting 23 hits and 24 RBIs in the teams 8 games. County
Sports' Jim Galloway chipped in with 11 HRs and 17 RBIs, and along with
Bill Malloy (9 HRs, 19 RBIs), Lou Russo (5 HRs, 13 RBIs) and Pitcher
Bill Brown's 5 HRs, led an explosive offense. HT Waller was a one man
machine for Jo's Pizza as he led them going 13-21 (.619) with 9

came back and won the championship over Triton 24-14 after previously beating
them 23-15 in winners bracket final. Triton made it back
to the finals by eliminating Warren Motors 19-17. Hometown favorite
Warren had previously eliminated County Sports, Little Caesars
and Howard's Furniture. With Cobbie Harrison only making three outs and
Bill Gatti slugging home runs (he hit 6 in one game), Jiffy was
too powerful for the Triton squad. Don Arndt of 4th place Howard's was
the MVP after an incredible display of hitting. Doug Majher led Triton
for the weekend with a 20-27 (.747), 6 HRs, 19 RBIs performance.

as they beat County Sports 27-26 and again 29-11 to win the title. Bert Smith
broke HT Waller's HR record of 16 set in 1969. Smith
hit 21 HRs. HT Waller (20), Stan Harvey (19, Don Arndt (18) and Gene
Fisher (13) of Howard's all bettered the record also. 727 total HRs were hit in the 67
tournament games.
Smith hit 7 in a row at one point and was named the National MVP for the
third time in his career. For County Sports, Jim Galloway and Mike Foley
both hit 16 HRs, John Davide and Larry Chiapetta hit 14 each, Joe
Konicki (11), Bill Malloy (10). Third Place Little Caesars also had some
impressive numbers, led by Jim Puckett (18), Mike Axelson (12) and Tex
Collins (11). This National provided some of the offensive greatest
slugfests of all time. Long Island's Jim Galloway has made the All
America team for the 8th time in 11 years .... at 7 different positions

300' fence and a more restricted flight ball and very windy conditions,
compared to the 727 in 67 games during last year's national, Howards
alone hit 126. Jerry's came out of the losers bracket
winning seven straight games, scored 5 runs in the 6th inning to come back and
beat Howard's
in the first game of
finals 13-12, to force the 'if' game. Howard's came back to win the Championship via a
18-6 win. Howard's had hit 1246 home runs in their 137
games during the season. They only hit 23 in the 8 games they played
this weekend. Gene Fisher led Howard's with 7. Stan Harvey (5), Don
Arndt (4), Bert Smith (4) and HT Waller (2) ... all future hall of
famers were held way below their average. Even the greatest Home Run
hitter in National Tournament play, Jim Galloway only mustered 1 HR in
his 20 at bats. Of the 28 players selected for the All-America teams,
14 or half of them did not hit one single HR. And the other 14 players
hit 46 total.

Pyramid Cafe became the first team from Cleveland to win the
coveted ASA Slow pitch National Championship. They have had a couple
runner-up finishes from Sheffield Bronze in 1958 and 1960, then Swing In
finished third twice in 1965 and 1966. But other than that, its
been one heartbreak after another. This year was different, this year,
Steve Loya's name became legendary. Winners Bracket Semi-Finals, Howard's Furniture
led 10-9 in bottom of 7th, Steve Loya comes up and hits a 3-run walk off
home run to win the game 12-10. Dave Jakubs had 2-HRs and 5 RBIs in the
Howard's victory. Jakubs had 13 RBIs in the tournament. Winners bracket final- Pyramid losing to Poindexter
Lumber 9-8 in bottom of 7th inning, once again, Steve Loya hits a walk
off homer, this, time a 2-run shot to give Pyramid a 10-9 win.
Poindexter went on to eliminate Howards 13-2 to get another crack at
Pyramid. Poindexter defeats Pyramid 14-8 to send the championship
to the "if" game. The game started at 2:00 AM as mist was covering the
field. Poindexter jumped out to a 7-6 lead, but Pyramid came back to
take a 10-7 lead, added another run to make the final score 11-7.
Cleveland had its first Slow Pitch National Championship. Fittingly,
Steve Loya was the MVP. He played the whole weekend with 8 stitches in
his wrist, due to a work accident that sliced his wrist down to the
bone. He wasn't sure he was going to be able to play!

The championship game started well for Warren Motors right from
the start, they won coin flip and elected to hit first. They proceeded
to score 19 runs in the first inning. Paul Johnson was stunned.
Ray Fleetwood hit two 3-run homers and then a solo shot in that inning
to account for 7 RBIs. By the time the game
was over, Warren had 37 hits and 14 Home Runs and the final score was
35-19 in favor of Warren Motors. Fleetwood ended up with 4 HRs and Mike
Nye was 6-6. The Florida team, who entered the
tournament with an incredible 88-2 record, went 6-0 to finish the season
with the best record of all time in slow pitch softball (94-2). At one
point during the season, Warren Motors won 78 games in a row. Co-MVP
Mike Nye, fittingly won the batting title (23-29) with a .793 average.
Nye finished the season with the highest season batting average of all
time (.769), a mark which would stand for almost 20 years. On a
side NOTE- This is the second straight year that Long Island's Mike
Foley finished lost the Batting Champion by .004 of a percentage point. In 1975, Foley lost
out .737 to .733 and this year, he lost by .004 again as Mike
Nye's .793 edged out Foley's .789 average.

runner-up team earned berths to the National Championships. Some
Regions were awarded an extra "at-large" berth if they had a larger
number of ASA teams registered.
Nelson came from losers bracket to defeat KSF twice; 24-23 and
26-25. Ironically, Nelson was put in the losers bracket by KSF 21-20. On
the way to the finals, Nelsons eliminated Jerry's Catering 30-14 and
Howard's Furniture 27-10, then had to defeat KSF twice. Nelson, trailing
23-20 in the 7th inning of the first championship game, scored 4 runs to
win 24-23. Henry Koper led off the inning with his 5th home run of the
game. Bruce Meade and Herman Rathman both flied out, then Al White
singled and Mighty Joe Young hit a 2-run homer to tie the game. it was
his second of the game. Dean Brunken came up and drilled a homer to give
Nelsons the lead and they got KSF out in the bottom of the 7th to force
the "if" game. Nelsons was leading 26-19 in the bottom of 7th, needing
just 3 outs to win, but it wasn't easy. Sidney Cooper, Charles Wright
and Greg Smith all hit 2-run homers to get KSF within one run 26-25, but
it wasn't meant to be. Nelson held on for a 26-25 win. Herman Rathman
hit 3 homers and had 8 RBIs in the final game. Bruce Meade, Henry Koper
and Joe Young all had 2 HRs for Nelsons. James Abercrombie and Charles
Wright each hit 3 HRs for KSF in the final game. The powerful
Nelson team had 6 players hit more then 10 HRs, - Meade (22) and Rathman
(22) tie for the lead, Koper (15), Young (12), White (11), Bill
Howes (11). KSF had Elliott (18), James Abercrombie (15) and
Wright (12). 3rd place Howard's had Don Arndt (13), Stan Harvey (12) and
HT Waller (11). Greg Fuhrman hit 16 for 4th place Jerry's Caterers. For
some reason, Mighty Joe Young was not selected to the All America team
despite going 32-38 (.667) with 12 HRs and 29 RBIs.

Campbell's Carpets realized their three year dream of an ASA
National Championship by holding off the mighty Howard's Furniture in
the championship. Campbell's advanced to the finals with a
convincing 41-12 win over American Realty. Denny Jones was 5-5 with two
walks in the game. He also hit 3 HRs as did Mike Cellura and Tom Sandau.
Howard's, sent to the loser's bracket by Ken Sander's Ford behind 4 HRs
each from Craig Elliott and Roger Mayo. Howard's then came back from the
loser's bracket, defeating Nelson's Painting 25-21, despite 5 HRs from
Curtis Williams of Nelson's. Don Arndt and Stan Harvey hit 3 each for
Howard's. After Howard's defeated American Realty in the loser's bracket
final, they out-homered Campbell's 22-8 in the first final on their way
to a 42-26 to
force the "if" game. Arndt and Harvey led Howard's once again as they
each hit 4 HRs in the game. Campbell's put that game behind them
and defeated Howard's 26-20 in the winner take all final game. Mike
Cellura hit 4 HRs in the game and Denny Jones shipped in with three.
Jones, Cellura and Tom Sandau combined for 12 hits and 8 HRs. Campbell's set a record by scoring 86 runs in a game in their victory
over AAFCO. The Carpetmen scored 17 runs in the first inning, 20
in the 4th and 25 in the 6th inning, before finally winning 86-21. Denny
Jones, Charles Pierce and Ron Masterson each collected 8 hits in the
game. Among Pierce's 8 hits were 5 HRs. He also had 11 RBIs. Denny
Jones, Russell Bradley and Randy Barlich all drove in 9 runs.
Right before the tournament started, Campbell's leading Al White was
hampered by double vision and could not play. John Sandau stepped in and
batted .720, made some great defensive plays and was named to the All
America team. In another scoring outburst, Ken Sanders Ford won its
first game 63-9 on the strength of a Nation home run record of 27
for one game. On another note, the legendary Bruce hit 5 home runs in
one game.

Nelco Manufacturing had a slim chance of winning this event. Most
thought it was gonna be another Howard's-Campbell final. But these
two teams met in a first round matchup. ASA's residency rule limited
Nelson's Painting to just local guys from Oklahoma, so only 6 of the
players on the USSSA/NSPC Nelson's team were eligible to play.
Campbell's defeated Howard's 17-16 in that first round matchup. The
North Carolina squad then reeled off 8 straight wins in the loser's
bracket before meeting Campbell's in the loser's bracket final.
The Howard's boys suffered the same fate, only this time, it wasn't as
close in the 27-8 decision Nelco want undefeated (7-0) as they defeated
Campbell's in the Championship game 14-13 on the strength of Bruce
Meade's double that drove in the tying and winning runs in the game.
Meade was 5-5 in that game and finished the tournament 25-35 with a .714
batting average, including 7 HRs and 18 RBIs. Nelco's "Might Joe"
Young was the tournament MVP as he batted only .559 (19-34), but had 10
HRs and 30 RBIs. He also hit a grand slam in Nelco's 18-15
winner's bracket final victory over Campbell's. The Nelso's Painting
team went on to win the NSPC and USSSA Championships to win the first
Triple Crown of Slow Pitch Softball for Sponsor RT Nelson. -
Note- Craig Elliott of Ken Sanders Ford hit 3 HRs in one inning and 9
consecutive HRs during the tournament --- a record that has yet to be
broken.

Campbell's Carpets captured the ASA National Championship on
their way to winning the Triple Crown of Softball in 1980. This was the
second straight year a team has won the Triple Crown. With all the high
averages, home runs, etc. It was a little guy who captured the
imagination of the crowd as Pitcher Buddy Slater was named the National
Tournament MVP for Campbell's. It was reported that Slater had hurled 9
no-hitters this past season in Slow Pitch Softball. The 38 year old Slater beat Howard's
twice in this tournament; once 23-14 in the winner's bracket finals and
then when Howard's won a slugfest over third place team Jerry's Caterers
36-32 in the lower's bracket final to get another crack at Campbell's,
Slater did it again, holding down the Howard's bats in route to a 20-15
Championship Game victory. In the 23-14 Campbells win over
Howard's, 9 different Campbell players hit home runs. In the 36-32
Howard's victory over Jerry's, Pitcher Mickey Morrison hit 4 HRs and
collected 9 RBIs. Ed Roth also hit 4 HRs with 7 RBIs and Stan Harvey had
3 HRs with 7 RBIs to lead Howard's. Jerry's Pitcher, Craig Elliott hit 4
HRs with 8 RBIs to lead the Miami based squad. Stan Harvey of
Howard's won the Batting championship with an amazing 30-38 performance
(.789). Howard's Tom Beall was 25-35 (.714) with 17 HRs to win the
Home Run Award. 10 of Beall's homers came in the first 2 games. Don
Arndt and Ed Roth of Howard's had 16 ad 15 HRs respectively.
Campbell's averaged close to 26 runs per game in its 6 game march to the
title. They gave up only 11 runs per game, mostly due to the crafty
pitching of Slater, who was 14-24 in the event (.500), and pitched all
of Campbell's games to finish 6-0. Other stars for Campbell's were
Jerry King (21-30, .700 with 8 HRs), Dick Bartel (20-30, .667 also with
8 HRs), and Steve Williams (13-25, .520 and he hit 5 HRs). Two of
Williams's HRs came in the Championship Game. Greg Fuhrman and Dennis
Myers both hit 9 HRs, but were left off the All-America squads.
