Artist: Al G
Title: Be Strong
Genre: Reggae
From the liner
notes by Raymond Green:
Welcome to the world
of Alfred Gumbs and his music. Beware, it is a land of pulsating reggae
rhytms that echoes with potent, spiritual lyrics. It's music to make you
dance, because Alfred, true to his Afro-Caribbean hertiage, believes that
rhytm is the lifeblood of good music. But above all, he wants to leave
a positive message in our minds. That is why this album is dedicated to
making humanity stronger.
If the message is
to be heard, however, the music must first captivate us. So, following
up on his first recording Just A Christmas Card, Alfred again captures
our attention with the originality and freshness of his music. The sound
is unmistakenably reggae, but Alfred is not content with drum and bass.
There are classic lines, rock and jazz fills that wind their way up and
under beautiful melodies. He describes this as Anglo-rock in tribute to
his Anguillian heritage.
Alfred believes
in classic reggae music with strong clean instumentation and the beauty
and emotion of the human voice. But, he is not afraid to explore the vast
possibilities of today's computerized keyboards to add new dimentions to
his music. But he remains tied to his roots. There is no mixing down the
reggae in favour of hip-hop, R&B or disco, as is now the fashion with
some Caribbean artists. As singer, songwriter, arranger, instrumentalist
and producer, Alfred wants to prove that we can conquer the world with
our music.
True to his call
to mankind to 'be strong', Alfred's music exudes the strength of his convictions.
Unlike many, he is willing to put it all out on the line. Belief in his
God underlines his call to the world for brotherhood, peace and a better
way of life for all oppressed peoples. There is no mistaking his personal
commitment when he says that he is 'a worker' and 'a soldier' in the cause.
However, he is not content with is own salvation, but wants humanity to
avoid the path of the 'foolish man' to 'leave babylon' and 'build on a
strong foundation'.
I invite you to
share in Alfred's music and his dream for a better world. The message is
in the music; let it touch your soul.
