Hi there, first of all I love mopeds and scooters and the best thing is that there are so many mods
that can be put onto the bikes. Wether it be tuning parts so your scoot goes a hell of a lot faster or
visual upgrades.
The first stage in making your scoot faster is by derestricting it. There are many ways in which
manufacturers restrict there bikes to the legal road limit of 30 mph.
HONDA SCOOTERS - The Honda X8R, SFX and X8BR 50cc scooters are restricted by a rev limiter in the CDI,
a washer in the exhaust system and a restricted variator that limits gearing.
Here is how to derestrict the Honda scooters.
1.There is a cone in the exhaust which can easily be removed by drilling or grinding
out the spot welds. Your top speed will increase from 30mph to roughly 35mph.
2. Second restriction is the CDI unit itself. The CDI limits the amount of revs.
The original CDI has two rev limiters built in, one at 7,500rpm and one at 9,250rpm.
The standard motor runs at 7,000rpm at peak power. To remove the rev limiter you must
remove the plastic cover and you will find a wire at the bottom of the CDI unit.
You cut the wire so that the wire isn't in contact with anything. Make sure you
seal the CDI unit back up with a water proof filler.
3. The front pulley variator has restricted movement. The easiest way to fix this is
to replace the variator assembly. Either a cheaper replacement unit or, if further
tuning is envisaged, a Malossi or Polini unit. To derestrict the variator you must
remove the fly wheel and behind there you will find a small washer the size of a
wedding ring. If this is removed then the gearing wil increase allowing the plates
to move closer to each other increasing the speed.
The variator, CDI and exhaust modifications will give an increase in speed from 30
to 33mph up to 42 to 45mph. The power of the motor from the exhaust modifications
rise from 3.5 to 5bhp, giving enough power at 50cc to go to 50mph.
Futher tuning could be advised for increased top speed. After derestriction a power pipe exhaust is
recommended. The best powerpipe for the honda x8r and sfx would be the Leo Vince ZX or Leo Vince RR.
Other exhausts are the technigas and Giannelli. A larger variator and drive belt is another enhancement
to the bike and to top it of a good old 70cc kit could be fitted bringing the top speed of the scoot
to a reasonable 70 mph.

PEUGEOT ELYSEO, TREKKER, VIVACITY, SPEEDFIGHT 50cc SCOOTERS
These motors are basically identical except for water-cooled cylinders and water pump driven from the
flywheel right-hand side of the motor, replacing the fan on the air-cooled engine and approximately 10%
higher gearing in the water-cooled motors.
To derestrict these scoots:
1.By the exhaust being fitted with a resonant tube (a blind pipe attached to the front pipe)
that should be cut off and welded up. This improves power and rev-on.
2. By a gearing restrictor in the variator body. This takes the form of a large diameter
plate next to the roller drive plate in the rear of the front pulley. It just requires
removal of the variator body cover and removal of the plate and reassembly.
GILERA DNA AND GILERA RUNNER 50cc SCOOTERS
The DNA is restricted in the usual way for Piaggio and Gilera scooters - a washer in the front pulley
(actually two) and a resonant pipe on the exhaust. The washers are removed the same as the honda x8r
peugeot scoots. The exhaust on the other hand is far harder. for this you must grind off the resonant
pipe and then weld the hole back up. The easy way around this restriction is to buy a powerpipe and
stick that on instead of the standard exhaust, this will give a approximate 25-40% performance increase.
With the restrictions removed the DNA and Runner are capable of speeds around 50-55 mph but some people
have got speeds of up to 62mph without further tuning parts. The top speed of a 70cc kitted DNA with
powerpipe, gear-up kit and larger variator will exceed 75 mph.
