History:
The Sandburg Eagles are one of
the most successful high school soccer programs in Illinois. The boys
soccer program began in 1983. Under the direction of Head Coach Brian Papa from
1984 to 1993, the Eagles totaled a 166-53-7 record and won 75 percent of their games.Coach Papa set a standard and tradition for our program, and his influence on the program will never be forgotten by his players and fellow coaches. In 1993, the Eagles had one
of the program's greatest accomplishments. Papa and his Assistant Coach Jim Pisani put
together a team that would string together 29 victories and 1 tie, and
eventually become the school’s first IHSA Tournament Champion since Carl Sandburg High School opened in 1954. The 1993 State Champions have been considered
by some experts to be the greatest team in the history of IHSA Soccer.
In 1994, the program came under
the direction of Head Coach Jack Ferraro. After returning from the college coaching ranks (Lewis University), Jim Pisani came back to coach Sandburg from 2000 to 2002. Coach Pisani's impact on Sandburg soccer will never be forgotten by his players and fellow coaches. During Coach Ferraro's tenure (1994 to the present), the Eagles
have continued a winning tradition by compiling a 254-72-17 record (winning 74% of their games). A second
State Championship was won by the Eagles in 2001 led by team captains Bob Beard
and Kevin Marszalek. In 2002, the Eagles repeated
back to back victories in the IHSA Finals, winning a third State Championship.
Future players can argue which team was the best 1993, 2001 or 2002.
Nevertheless, the 2002 Eagles led by Cole Glassner,
John Partyka and Jed Zayner
did accomplish an achievement that few Illinois
teams have or ever will succeed in winning, a back to back state championship.
Other highlights of the program are its 3rd place finish in the 1994
IHSA Tournament, and berths as an Elite Eight finalist (1996, 2003, 2005 IHSA
Tournament).
The program has continued its success because of outstanding
players such as Eric Lukin,Nick Kolliniatis,Tim Regan and Jed Zayner, who not
only excelled as players in high school and college, but at the professional
levels (MLS,Greece and Germany)
as well. There are many individual
players in our program have achieved special recognition. Many Sandburg
athletes in the program have earned All-Conference, All-Sectional and All-State
Player Awards. Four Sandburg players have been awarded All-American honors.
They are Josh Feigl (1992 and 1993), Nick Kolliniatis (1994), Tim Regan (1998) and Jed Zayner (2002). Outstanding individual players help make
great teams. They raise the level of their teammates’ play, and these teams
become champions. Their tradition continues. After competing in and winning the program’s first
Sectional Championship in 1993, the Eagles had made it to the IHSA Sectional
Final Championship for 10 years in a row. The streak ended in 2004. Recently in 2005 and 2006, the Eagles began what is hopefully
a new decade of sectional final appearances. The Eagles have made it to the
IHSA Finals seven times between 1993 and 2005. Under Coach Ferraro's tenure from 2001 to 2006, the program has made four appearances in the
IHSA State Tournament
Quarterfinals.. The annual
goal of future seasons is to get to the IHSA Finals so we can have the
opportunity to win a state championship, and we will always do our best to
achieve this objective. In 2005, the Eagles began competing in s newly formed
conference. Our new conference is the Southwest
Suburban Conference. SICA is conference
that we had been part of before 2005.
