Jan-Michael Gambill added the doubles title to his singles crown at the Citrix Tennis Championships by joining forces with compatriot Andy Roddick to defeat Thomas Shimada of Japan and South African Myles Wakefield 6-3, 6-4.
"What I have accomplished this week doesn't happen very often," said Gambill. "It is a great feeling to me to come out and play great singles and then play great doubles. It just shows how important doubles can be to a player."
Gambill said that he hopes to play doubles with Roddick more regularly next year, and paid tribute to his 18 year-old friend and partner.
"I have to thank Andy for pulling me through. It shows what a good player he has become," said Gambill.
It was a first professional title for Roddick, and a surprise for a man who thinks of himself mainly as a singles player.
"I thought I was a terrible doubles player," said Roddick. "Normally, I'm just not good, so it was definitely a surprise. But it is really nice to end the week on such a positive note."
