The Genies tournament team continued their impressive string of improved performances with a solid 4th place finish at the 2002 AAU State Championships held April 26-28 in Chandler. In their first-round game Friday night, a severely short-handed Genies squad, playing with just six players, fell to the Arizona Silver Streak by a score of 30-19. The Genies led by two at the quarter, and trailed by just two at the half, before the Silver Streak and their 12-girl roster finally wore them down with a non-stop full-court press and half-court zone trap. However, the following day, with the team again at full-strength, the Genies broke into the win column with a thrilling 20-16 come-from-behind victory over the Scottsdale Select, a team that had defeated the Genies in their two previous tournament match-ups. Then, later that same day, in a game that would have propelled the Genies into the tournament semi-finals, the Genies roared back from a 14-point second-half deficit against the Arizona Thunder, getting within two points with just eight seconds remaining, only to see the Thunder nail both ends of a one-and-one to secure a 30-26 victory. Although the end result was a heart-breaking defeat, the girls had legitimate chances to win each game in the tournament, and have now shown they can compete with any team in the state. They will continue to work hard in preparation for their next tournament appearance, scheduled for June 1-2 at the Tucson Grand Canyon Games.
