With the Genies tournament team down to just six players for the 2002 Cinco de Mayo Tournament due to illness and school field trips, inconsistant play was to be expected. And that's exactly what occurred. But after experiencing their biggest loss ever in the first round (34-5 to the Silver Streak) in a game in which nothing went right for the Genies and everything went right for the SS, the Genies came back to win two of their next three games and in the process wrapped up third place in the tournament. In the their second round game the Genies got back on track with a 40-8 win over the Falcons. Then with a chance to reach the tournament championship game with a victory, the girls dropped a closely contested 30-21 decision to the Select. Finally, at the end of a very long day and in their final game of the tournament, the Genies came away with another win over the Falcons by a count of 10-6. The rather sloppy final-game win over a team they had beat by 32 points earlier in the day, was the culmination of playing five games (including one league game) in just 26 hours, with only one substitute. The girls have earned a well-deserved break from tournament competition and will now rest up prior to competing in the Tucson Grand Canyon Games beginning June 1.
