The Genies finished in second place at the 2003 Cinco de Mayo Tournament, dropping both of their contests with the Silver Streaks while defeating the Falcons twice. In their first round game, the Genies led from start to finish against a scrappy Falcons team that was playing its first tournament in the U11 division. Though not a blowout, the Genies were able to maintain a comfortable advantage throughout the 31-18 victory. After falling to the top-ranked Silver Streaks 50-22 in the second round, the Genies then had a surprise rematch with the Falcons, who had upset the Phoenix Phenoms earlier in the day. This time, however, the Genies made quick work of the Falcons, building a large early lead and then coasting to a 44-19 win. That set-up a return engagement with the Silver Streaks in the championship game. Despite a slow start, the Genies were able to keep it relatively close for about a half -- just as they had done in previous match-ups earlier in the year -- and trailed by just nine early in the second stanza. But the Streaks, who have not lost to an Arizona-based team this season, eventually pulled away for a 45-19 win, leaving the Genies to settle for their second second-place finish of the year. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Maylinn (8+7+7+5=27), followed by Kelsey (4+4+8+3=19), Cara (8+4+6+0=18), Brittany (2+2+6+7=17), Cathryn (6+0+7+2=15), Tara (3+3+6+0=12), Shannon (0+0+6+2=8) and Kelsi (0+2+0=2). Brittany led the team in rebounding with 20, followed by Cara (18), Maylinn (14), Shannon (10), Cathryn (9), Kelsey and Tara (7 each) and Kelsi (5). Following the championship game Brittany and Cathryn were singled out for individual recognition by being selected to the All-Tournament team. Also noteworthy was the first tournament appearance by the new Genies U10 team. Playing in just two tournaments this year, the "Teeny Genies" as they have been affectionately dubbed, are actually a collection of eight and nine-year-olds who are prepping for what will eventually be the second Genies club team. Despite dropping all three of their first tournament games by lopsided margins, the girls are already positioning themselves as players to be reckoned with in years to come and received numerous compliments for their spunk and determination from opposing coaches and fans.
