Genies Solid Effort Garners Third Place Finish At Duel In The Desert

The Genies are well past being satisfied with "good efforts" at the expense of wins, however, their third place finish at the Arizona Elite's Duel in the Desert saw many positives emerge even in defeat. With the exception of a game-opening lapse in their second round contest with the Elite, the Genies played solid basketball throughout the tournament. In their first round matchup with the Rez Ballers, the Genies scored the game's last nine points to finish with a 30-21 victory. Then, the following morning against the host Elite, the Genies fell behind 8-0 in the opening five minutes of the game. The Genies ultimately outscored the Elite from that point on, but could never get closer than three points before falling 19-14. Later that day, while emphasizing an up-tempo pace, the Genies again finished with a flourish, scoring the game's final 12 points in route to a 33-21 victory over the Sting and a berth in the semifinals. However, it was a surprise opponent that greeted the Genies early Sunday morning. Instead of their expected rematch with the Elite, the Genies encountered the Lady AZ Silver Streaks, the state's top-ranked team, which had suffered an upset loss the previous day to the Elite, the Streaks first defeat of the year to an Arizona-based team. The Genies gave an inspired effort and kept the game close throughout, trailing by just six with five minutes to play, before falling 23-15. The Silver Streaks then went on to defeat the Elite by six in the championship game. Despite the Genies two setbacks, the girls proved they can play competitively with any team in the state, and that some of their recent moral victories may soon be replaced with the real thing. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Maylinn (8+5+11+8=32), followed by Tara (2+3+7+2=14) and Kelsey (10+0+4+0=14), Shannon (2+5+2+0=9) and Cathryn (6+2+1+0=9), Cara (1+0+3+3=7), Kelsi (1+0+2+2=5) and Brittany (0+0+3+0=3). Cathryn led the team in rebounding with 18, followed by Maylinn (17), Kelsey (16), Cara and Brittany (7 each), Shannon (6), Tara (5) and Kelsi (2).
