Genies Place Third At Payson Tourney

The fifth-grade Genies captured third place honors at the City of Payson Youth Tournament, April 5 despite being one of the youngest teams in the sixth-grade-and-under, ten-team event. The Genies opening round game with the Tonto-Apache Warriors was another classic David vs. Goliath matchup, a situation the Genies are all too familiar with. With Tonto-Apache featuring a front-line that included both a 5'10" and a 5'8" girl, it initially looked like the Genies, whose tallest girl stands 5'3", were about to do battle with a Junior Varsity club. However, once the game began, it was the Tonto team that looked outclassed. The Genies used their superior skill and teamwork to frustrate the bigger team while racing to a 10-2 first half lead. Then in the second half, the Genies controlled the tempo and the clock while finishing off a 26-14 win. Unfortunately for the Genies, their second round matchup with the Arizona Thunder, also followed a familiar pattern. For the fourth time this season, the Genies let a late-game lead slip away to the Thunder. Entering the fourth quarter up by one, the Genies failed to convert several scoring opportunities and fell by a score of 30-24. Finally, in the day's final contest, the Genies dominated the Gilbert NJB All-Stars, running out to an 18-2 halftime lead, before cruising to a 23-12 victory and third place in the tournament. The Genies were led in scoring by Maylinn (7+11+4=22), followed by Cara (9+6+2=17), Tara (4+4+8=16), Kelsi (3+0+4=7), Shannon (2+0+2=4), Kelsey (0+1+2=3) and Brittany (1+2+0=3). Maylinn also led the team in rebounding with 18, followed by Cara, Cathryn and Brittany (9 each), Kelsey (8), Tara (6), Shannon (4) and Kelsi (2).
