Genies Finish Disappointing Fourth at Phenoms Tournament

The Genies suffered through perhaps their poorest tournament performance of the year, before coming back to win the fourth place game at the Phoenix Phenoms Spring Shootout. In the first round, the Genies fell to the eventual tournament champion AZ Lady Silver Streaks 36-14. However, it was their second round 17-16 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Sting that was the toughest to swallow. After jumping to a quick 11-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Genies then went ice-cold from the field, finishing a miserable 6-for-44 for the game. They also failed to convert on two free throw attempts with less than 30 seconds remaining that could have given them the lead. In the fourth place game, the girls got back on track with a convincing 34-9 win over the host Phenoms. The Genies did not give up a second half point in this contest and every girl on the roster scored at least one basket. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Cara (6+4+2=12) and Tara (2+4+6=12), followed by Kelsey (0+1+10=11) and Maylinn (5+2+4=11), Cathryn (1+0+6=7), Shannon (0+4+2=6) and Brittany (0+1+4=5). Maylinn was the top rebounder with 14, followed by Cathryn and Kelsey (12 each), Cara (10), Shannon (9) and Tara and Brittany (8 each). Also noteworthy, during Saturday's intermission, Cara won the tournament free throw competition by sinking 8-out-of-10 during the initial contest, and 3-out-of-5 in a sudden death tiebreaking shootout. That was followed by Coach Steve's victory in the Coaches Bump Out competition.
