Free Throw Woes Doom Both Genies Teams at Cinco de Mayo Tournament

Sometimes it’s the little things that matter most, and nothing loomed larger for the Genies this past weekend than missed free throws. The end result was the most disappointing tournament showing of the season for both the 10s and 11s, as each team saw games slip through their fingers in large part due to missed foul shots. The 10s started the tournament with a forfeit victory when their scheduled opponent, the Arizona Fire, had only one player available at game time. In the second round the Genies dropped a 39-11 decision to the powerful Arizona Thunder team. That set up a loser’s bracket contest against the DFAC Falcons, a team the Genies had previously defeated twice. However, in what turned out to be the lowest scoring contest of the season, the Genies were unable to take advantage of the Falcons aggressive, fouling style of play. Despite reaching the bonus early-on in both halves, the Genies missed free throw after free throw throughout the game and came away on the short end of a 7-6 contest. Finally, in the third place game, the Genies routed the Arizona Fire by a score of 26-6. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Candice and Chemiah with 10 points each, followed by Natalie (7), Kelly (6), Elysia (4), Shadora and Rebecca (2 each) and Morgan and Elizabeth (1 each). The Genies 11s saw their two-year string of reaching tournament championship games snapped at nine when they fell not once, but twice to the Arizona Sting. After a first-round bye as the tournament’s top-seed, the Genies played a nip-and-tuck game with the Sting, and found themselves at the free throw line shooting two with just six seconds to go and trailing by one. However, neither foul shot found the mark and girls were left with a tough 30-29 defeat. The team bounced back in the second round with a solid 43-24 victory over the Arizona Thunder. However, with a chance to reach the finals on the line, the Genies again fell to the Sting, this time 36-34 in a game that saw the Genies shoot just 8-18 from the free throw line. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Cara with 28, including a Genies record four three-pointers in the final game, followed by Tara (23), Amber (18), Ashton (14), Kelsi (8), Cecilia (7), and Alexis and Alyssa (4 each). Ashton led the team in rebounding with 28, followed by Cara (20), Cecilia (14), Amber (10), Tara and Alexis (9 each), Kelsi (5) and Alyssa (3). Following their final game Cara was named to the All-Tournament team. The Genies third place finish moves their overall 2004 record to 33-8.
