For the second consecutive tournament the Genies 11s inability to convert at the free throw line proved to be their downfall, this time costing them the championship at the 2004 Duel in the Desert. The top-seeded Genies opened the tournament with a bye, before knocking off the Phoenix Phenoms 25-13 to advance to the semifinals. There, they encountered the host Arizona Elite squad. But whereas in the teams’ last two meetings – a pair of Genies victories in the AAU state championships -- the Genies had been able to score repeatedly in transition, this time the Elite succeeded in slowing the game’s pace and controlling the tempo. Although the Genies again prevailed by the score of 16-14, the tone had been set for the championship rematch played the next day. There, the Elite jumped to an early lead, slowed the game to a virtual standstill and led 5-2 at the half. The Genies had several second half opportunities to take control, but a 4-for-13 free throw performance ultimately doomed their comeback and they fell 14-10. For the low-scoring tournament the Genies were led by Tara with 11 points, followed by Cara (10), Amber (8), Cecilia and Kelsi (6), Alyssa (4) and Alexis and Ashton (3 each). Ashton led the team in rebounding with 25, followed by Cecilia (14), Cara (12), Alexis (9), Amber (8), Tara (7) and Kelsi and Alyssa (4 each). The Genies 2-1 tournament mark moves their overall 2004 record to 35-9. The Genies 10s also had trouble scoring and were defeated in their three games by scores of 21-11 (Elite), 28-9 (Arizona Thunder) and 11-7 (Elite). For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Chemiah and Natalie with 6 points each, followed by Candice (4), Elysia and Shadora (3 each), Morgan and Elizabeth (2 each) and Ashlin (1). Both Genies teams will now turn their attention to hosting the 2004 Genies Jamboree! Friday and Saturday, May 21-22 at Mesquite High School in Gilbert.
