Genies 11s Fall In Grand Canyon State Games Championship; 10s Claim First Club Tournament Victory

The Genies U11 team fought long and hard before settling for second place at the 2004 Winter Grand Canyon State Games. Their 31-24 setback at the hands of the Arizona Elite was the Genies first loss in a championship game this year, and was the culmination of an exhausting four games played in one day -- three of which were played with just six players. The Genies started the tournament with a heart-stopping 32-30 overtime victory over the Arizona Sting. The Genies withstood game-tying three-point field goals with just seconds left in both regulation and overtime, before Cara nailed two game-winning free throws with no time on the clock in the extra period. After dropping a 35-22 decision to the Elite, the Genies had to come back through the loser's bracket and beat the Sting again, this time 27-20. That set up the championship encounter with the Elite, but the girls, running on fumes as they began their fourth game in eight hours, saw a one-point halftime deficit slowly grow to the final seven point margin. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Amber with 26 points, followed by Cara (23), Ashton (14), Alyssa and Alexis (10 each), Cecilia and Kelsi (8 each) and Tara (5). Ashton and Cara tied for the rebounding lead with 24, followed by Cecilia (22), Alyssa and Alexis (10 each), Amber (8), Tara (7) and Kelsi (2). The Genies moved their overall 2004 record to 22-4. On the U10 side, the Genies fell just short of reaching their first championship game of the year, but on way collected their first club tournament win with a come-from-behind 13-4 win over the Elite. Trailing 3-0 at halftime, the Genies took control in the second half, outscoring the Elite by a 13-1 margin and in the process completely shutting down the Elite's big girl. After falling to the Arizona Thunder 36-8, the Genies met up with the Elite again in the semi-finals. This time the Genies were unable to overcome another three point halftime deficit and fell by a score of 11-9. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Natalie with seven points, followed by Chemiah (6), Kelly and Elysia (5 each), Elizabeth (4), Shadora (2) and Candice (1). Morgan also contributed hustle and defense throughout the tournament.
