It is generally considered poor form for a host to benefit at a guest’s expense. However, after politely welcoming each tournament participant to their tournament, the Gilbert Genies turned their attention to stopping those same guests from getting what they came for: a tournament championship. Instead, the Genies kept the first place trophy for themselves after defeating the Arizona Sting (32-24) in the championship contest. Ashton Jones led the Genies in the final game with 10 points, while Erin Curry, Chelsea Hough and Kashara Starks all netted four for the Sting. The Genies had reached the championship following victories over the Lady AZ Silver Streaks (35-12) and Arizona Thunder (18-17 in overtime). The Sting had previously defeated the DFAC Falcons (21-17) and Arizona Elite (17-15). The Elite knocked off the Thunder (39-13) in the third place game and the Falcons beat the Silver Streaks (39-9) for fourth. The All-Tournament team as selected by the participating coaches consisted of Tori Sheaffer (Thunder), Chloe O’Connor (Arizona Lightning), Kim Schlecht (Sting), Rasha Thornburg (North Country Spirit), Cara Bomar (Genies), Chelsea Brumby (Silver Streaks), Simone Westbrook (Elite) and Kacie Donovan (Falcons). Also noteworthy: the Arizona Sting finished first in the inaugural Spirit Competition, the Thunder’s Candice Giffin won the Free Throw contest and the Genies’ Steve Bomar captured the Coach’s 3 Pt. Shootout during Saturday’s noontime intermission.
