Genies 11s Return To Form, Capture Jamboree Championship – 10s Finish Third

It was an exciting yet hectic two days for the entire Genies organization as they hosted the third annual Genies Jamboree at Mesquite High School in Gilbert. And fortunately, in addition to the many duties associated with being gracious hosts to 22 teams in three age divisions, the girls found time to win a few basketball games, too. The Genies 11s entered play having failed to win the last two tournaments they had entered – their first such streak of the year. However, they quickly served notice that this was one streak they did not want to continue, with a one-sided 35-12 victory over the Lady AZ Silver Streaks in Friday’s opening round game. On Saturday, the Genies withstood last second shots at the end of regulation and overtime before emerging with a thrilling 18-17 win against the Arizona Thunder. Then, in the tournament finals, the Genies wrapped up their sixth tournament championship of the year by knocking off the Arizona Sting by a count of 32-24. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Ashton with 20 points, followed by Cara (17), Kelsi and Amber (14 each), Tara (11), Alexis (5) and Cecilia (4). Cara led the team in rebounding with 20, followed by Ashton and Tara (19 each), Amber (15), Alexis (10), Kelsi (9) and Cecilia and Alyssa (5 each). The three tournament victories move the Genies 2004 overall record to 38-9. On the U10 side, the Genies (pictured above in the Spirit Competition) started the tournament in fine style with two dominating victories Friday evening (40-3 against The Rise and 21-5 vs. the North Country Spirit), before dropping their two Saturday encounters (27-2 vs. Thunder; 16-8 vs Elite) and finishing in third place. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Kelly with 19 points, followed by Elysia (13), Morgan (8), Elizabeth and Natalie (6 each), Shadora (5), Ashlin and Chemiah (4 each) and Candice and Rebecca (3 each). Following the tournament Kelly was named to the U10 all-tournament team and Cara was selected to the U11’s. Coach Steve also took home the Coach’s 3 Pt. Shootout championship at Saturday’s noontime intermission.
