Genies 11s Finish 2-2 in NJB Sun Hoops Tournament; 10s Go 1-3

The Genies U11 team had two opportunities to make a splash at the 2004 Arizona Sun Hoops tournament, but failed to capitalize on either of them, and as a result finished in a disappointing fifth place with a 2-2 record. The Genies started strong with a one-sided 42-13 victory over the Lady AZ Silver Streaks. However, tournament organizers had inexplicably placed the division’s top three teams all in the same pool, so the Genies next two games were essentially a virtual championship round-robin competition. And although the Genies led each game at the half, their season-long difficulties at the free throw line again proved the difference as they fell to the Arizona Elite (32-25) and the NJB Stars (42-39). The girls finished on a positive note with a solid 43-25 victory over the host Arizona Sting in the fifth place game. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Cara with 48 points, followed by Kelsi (26), Tara (25), Ashton (17), Cecilia (15), Alyssa (10) and Alexis (6). Ashton led the team with 51 rebounds, including a remarkable 22 against the Stars. She was followed by Cara (37), Cecilia (32), Tara (25), Alexis (17), Alyssa (10) and Kelsi (9). The tournament results move the Genies overall 2004 record to 41-14. The Genies 10s also let a chance at a second place finish slip through their hands before finishing in fourth place with a 1-3 tournament record. The Genies opened the tournament with an impressive 33-17 victory over the DFAC Falcons, before dropping a 41-15 decision to the overpowering Arizona Thunder team. Then, with second place up for grabs, the girls came out on the short end of a pair of tightly-contested games (22-20 vs. NJB Stars and 30-25 against the Arizona Elite). For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Natalie with 36 points, followed by Elysia (19), Chemiah (10), Candice (8), Kelly (7), Morgan and Ashlin (4 each) and Elizabeth (1).
