Genies 11s Travel To Payson, Return With Tournament Championship

The Genies U11 team traveled all the way to Payson to do battle with two teams they could have played in their own backyard. But the result was a familiar one as the Genies captured their fourth 2004 tournament championship in five attempts. In their opening round game the Genies started rather slowly and actually trailed the Globe Satin Razors at the end of the first quarter. However, the Genies built a six-point lead by halftime and were never seriously threatened before winning 27-19. That set up a semifinal matchup with the Chandler-based AZ Lady Silver Streaks, a team the Genies see regularly in local tournaments but had not yet played this season. The Genies jumped to an early 10-2 lead before cruising to an 18-13 win. In the championship contest, the Genies raced to a 24-point halftime advantage and coasted to a 60-21 victory over an overmatched Gilbert NJB All-Star team. Kelsi's 17-point performance paced the Genies in the championship game as the Genies scored fastbreak-after-fastbreak. For the three-game tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Kelsi and Tara with 22 points each, they were followed by Cara (19), Ashton (16), Amber (12), Cecilia (6) and Alyssa and Alexis (2 each). Cara led the team in rebounding with 26 followed by Ashton (13), Amber (12), Cecilia (11), Tara (9), Alexis (7), Kelsi (4) and Alyssa (1). The three wins move the Genies 2004 record to 25-4. The Genies U10 team also competed in the tournament and came within one game of reaching their first tournament championship contest of the season -- a game that would have pitted the Genies U10 and U11 teams against each other. In their first-round contest the Genies built a nine-point halftime lead against the Payson Lady Ballers before hanging on for a 21-17 win. In the semifinals the girls quickly fell into a 7-0 hole against the Gilbert NJB All-Stars, and despite playing them virtually even the entire rest of the way, could never pull even before falling 23-15. Finally, in the third place game with the Silver Streaks U11 team, the Genies held their own for most of the first half before the bigger and older Streaks pulled away for a 28-8 victory. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Candice with 15 points followed by Natalie (8), Elysia (5), Shadora, Kelly and Morgan (4 each), and Chemiah and Elizabeth (2 each).
