The Genies U11 team continued its impressive string of championship appearances, reaching the finals of the 2004 Phoenix Phenoms tournament before dropping a 59-21 decision to the defending AAU national champions from San Gabriel Valley, Calif. The tournament began Friday evening with a matchup against the Arizona Elite. The Genies led the tightly contested game most of the way and withstood a last-second three-point attempt by the Elite before emerging with a 23-21 victory. In the second round the Genies put together one of their best all-around efforts of the year, posted a season-high 43 rebounds and romped past the Arizona Sting 40-16. After dropping a 46-21 contest to SGV, the girls faced off once again with the Sting in the semifinals. This time the Genies used a 13-point run late in the first half to overcome a first quarter deficit and eventually built a 20-point lead in route to a 39-28 win and a berth in the championship. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Cara with 29 points, followed by Kelsi and Amber (27 each), Tara (25), Alexis (15), Cecilia (8) and Alyssa (4). Cara and Ashton tied for the team lead in rebounding with 34 each, followed by Cecilia (23), Tara (22), Amber (18), Alexis (15), Kelsi (14) and Alyssa (10). The Genies have reached the championship game in all six tournaments they have entered this season coming away with four titles and have a 28-6 overall record (28-4 vs. Arizona teams). The Genies U10 team posted its strongest tournament performance of the year finishing with a 2-2 mark and placing third in the five-team U10 division. The 10s started the tournament with a solid 22-12 win over the DFAC Falcons. In the second round the Genies fell to the eventual tournament champion team from San Gabriel Valley 32-8, but bounced right back to defeat the Arizona Elite 16-9 in the third place game. Finally, with a chance to reach their first championship game of the year, the Genies dropped a 27-6 decision to the Arizona Thunder. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Morgan with 10 points, followed by Elysia (7), Candice and Natalie (7 each), Elizabeth (6), Chemiah (5), Shadora (4) and Kelly and Ashlin (2 each). Also noteworthy was Amber's 1st place finish in the 3-point competition held during Saturday's intermission and Coach Steve's successful title defense in the Coach's Bumpout competition.
