What do you do for an encore after winning back-to-back state championships? If you’re the Genies 12U team, you set your sights on a national title. And a national title is exactly what they got after wrapping up the 2005 season with a bang by capturing the AAU Division II Western Nationals championship, June 25 – July 1 in Phoenix. The Genies compiled a 7-0 tournament record and topped the Arizona Elite 45-28 in the championship game, after previously defeating teams from Texas, Delaware, Wisconsin, Colorado and Arizona. For the tournament the Genies were led by Ashton Jones with 64 points and 66 rebounds, followed by Cara Bomar (58/26), Tara Rickenbach (58/38), Amberlee Tialino (33/37), Mackenzie Flannigan (31/44), Kelsi Haugo (24/21), Alyssa Heeman (15/5) and Shana Davis (12/29). The national title capped a banner year for the Genies who captured their second straight Arizona AAU title in April, and finished the season with a record of 50-9 against teams from seven different states, including a sparkling 37-4 mark against Arizona’s other 12U club teams. The Genies 2005 campaign also featured 12 title game appearances in the 15 tournaments they entered with 10 championships. The Genies 10s also participated in the Division II tournament and walked away with the third place trophy after compiling a 2-3 record, including a hard-fought one-point overtime loss to the eventual tournament champion Arizona Thunder.
