Genies Play To Disappointing Finishes At Christmas Classic

The Genies 11s and 13s were in tournament action together for the first time this season at the Christmas Classic, and whereas in the past the teams often fulfilled their goals of winning dual championships, this time around both squads ended their tournament play on disappointing notes. The Genies 11s did reach the final game, but playing without two of their strongest rebounders, came out on the short end of a 40-24 contest with the Arizona Thunder. Previously, the girls had defeated the Hoop Angels (40-9) and the North Country Spirit (16-11) and had dropped a second-round game to the Thunder (30-25). For the tournament the Genies were led by Alex Nicholls with 25 points, 28 rebounds, three steals and one assist for 57 Total Stats. She was followed by Rebecca Rudd (14+17+8+7 = 46TS), Jerrica Villescaz (10+17+7+1 = 35TS), Tessa Smith (19+12+2+1 = 34TS), Elizabeth Rudd (15+13+2+2 = 32 TS), Candice Bomar (12+0+4+5 = 21 TS), Michela McGertt (6+3+7+2 = 18TS) and Ashlin Palmer (5+2+7+2 = 16TS). The 11s overall record now stands at 4-2. The Genies 13s started tournament play with a bang, rolling to a one-sided 69-29 win over the Fundamentals. Ashton Jones led the charge with a career-high 19 points. In the second round the Genies fought back from a 15-point second half deficit to force overtime before falling 29-25 to the Arizona Premier 14U team. Then, with a chance to force a rematch with the Premier, the Genies instead shot a miserable 3-for-15 from the foul line in a 37-34 loss to the DFAC Falcons and settled for third place. For the tournament the Genies were led by Jones with 31 points, 21 rebounds, four steals and one assist for 57 Total Stats. She was followed by Mackenzie Flannigan (16+21+9+5 = 51TS), Cara Bomar (21+15+6+4 = 46TS), Tara Rickenbach (12+10+8+12 = 42 TS), Alyssa Heeman (12+3+7+9 = 31TS), Amber Tialino (11+9+8+2 = 30TS), Shana Davis (12+13+1+1 = 27TS) and Kelsi Haugo (13+4+2+2 = 21TS). Both Genies teams will next be in action at the highly-competitive MLK Invitational held in Cypress, California January 14-16.
