Genies 10s and 12s Win Dual Championships at Holiday Hoopla Tournament

Amberlee Tialino’s 15-foot jump shot at the overtime buzzer gave the Gilbert Genies U12 team a dramatic 25-24 victory over the Arizona Elite and the championship of the 2005 Holiday Hoopla basketball tournament January 9 at Basha High School in Chandler. The victory capped a highly successful tournament for the Genies organization as the club’s other team captured the U10 championship just an hour earlier. The Genies 12s held a two-point advantage in the championship game with just eight seconds remaining when Arizona’s Mallory Wayne hit a three-pointer to give the Elite a one-point lead. But the Genies quickly inbounded the ball to point guard Tara Rickenbach, who zig-zagged her way up the court and found Tialino open on the right wing for the game-winner as time expired. For the three-game tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Cara Bomar with 23 points, followed by Ashton Jones (18), Shana Davis (17), Rickenbach (15), Kelsi Haugo (12), Alyssa Heeman and Tialino (7 each) and Ashlee Byrd (2). Jones led the team in rebounding with 24, followed by Bomar and Davis (17 each), Tialino (16), Rickenbach (7), Haugo (5) and Heeman and Byrd (4 each). Their three tournament victories move the Genies 12s 2005 record to 6-0 with championships in both tournaments they have entered. The Genies 10s used three consecutive first half three-pointers by Candice Bomar to break open a close game and cruised to a 31-14 victory over the Arizona Elite 10s in the championship game of the 10-and-under division. The 10s had previously defeated the Arizona Sting (53-7) and the Elite (15-7) in route to the championship game. For the three-game tournament the Genies 10s were led in scoring by Bomar with 23 points, followed by Rebecca Rudd (22), Elizabeth Rudd (21), Ashlin Palmer (12), Caitlin Evans (9) and Tessa Smith, Michela McGertt and Cyndee Flanagan (4 each). Rebecca Rudd led the team in rebounding with 18, followed by Elizabeth Rudd (13), Smith (12), Flanagan (9), Evans (7), Tenae Hinrichs (5), McGertt (3), Palmer (2) and Bomar (1). At the conclusion of the tournament the 12s Rickenbach and the 10s Bomar were named to the all-tournament team.
