Genies 12s Repeat As Jamboree Champions; 10s Fare Well In U11 Division

The Genies 12s shook off their first loss in almost two months, battling back through unfamiliar terrain -- the loser's bracket -- before hanging on for a thrilling 29-28 victory over the DFAC Falcons in the championship game of the 2005 Genies Jamboree! The Genies opened defense of their tournament title with two easy victories (43-16 over the Phoenix Phenoms and 37-9 against the North Country Spirit), before dropping a 22-19 encounter with the Falcons. That sent the girls to a tougher than usual match-up with the Arizona Thunder, a game that evolved into an old-fashioned shootout, with both teams sinking a number of three-point bombs throughout the second half before the Genies secured the 39-35 win. In the tournament final, the Genies led for most of the game before the Falcons fought back for a late five-point advantage. However, with less than two minutes to play, Cara Bomar's three-pointer pulled the team to within two, and a clutch basket and free throw by Ashton Jones and Tara Rickenbach, respectively, set the stage for the frantic final seconds. With the score tied, Jones came up with a loose ball and passed to Kelsi Haugo for a potential winning layup, only to have Haugo fouled from behind with three seconds left. After missing the first foul shot, Haugo calmly sank the second and the Genies had claimed their second consecutive Jamboree title. For the tournament the Genies were led by Jones with 28 points and 21 rebounds, she was followed by Haugo (28/7), Shana Davis (25/14), Cara Bomar (24/16), Alyssa Heeman (24/7), Tara Rickenbach (23/13), Mackenzie Flannigan (9/11) and Amberlee Tialino (7/36). The Genies 4-1 tournament mark moves their 2005 overall record to 38-8. The Genies 10s made their first appearance in the U11 division and acquitted themselves quite well. After dropping a 27-6 decision to the Arizona Elite 11s, the girls bounced back with a solid 27-14 victory over the North Country Spirit 11s. Then, in the fourth place game, the Genies came away with a hard-fought 21-20 loss at the hands of the Arizona Thunder 10s. Trailing by seven late in the game, the Genies got three-point field goals by Elizabeth Rudd and Tessa Smith to close to within one. However, Smith's final shot with just seconds to play bounced off the rim. For the tournament the Genies were once again led by Smith with 17 points and 15 rebounds, followed by Elizabeth Rudd (11/4), Alex Nicholls (8/6), Caitlin Evans (4/3), Ashlin Palmer (3/2), Candice Bomar (3/2), Jerrica Villescaz (2/6), Michela McGertt (2/1) and Rebecca Rudd (1/3). At the conclusion of the tournament the 12s Rickenbach and the 10s Smith were named to the all-tournament teams.
