Genies Travel To California; 12s Finish 3rd At MLK Invitational

The Genies search for upgraded competition took them outside the friendly confines of Arizona and into the ultra-competitive world of California basketball at the MLK Invitational hosted by National Junior Basketball and held at a variety of sites throughout the Cypress-Fullerton area. Once there, the Genies 12s acquitted themselves quite nicely, posting a 3-2 overall mark and finishing in third place. The Genies went 2-1 in pool play with solid victories over the Brea Polcats (39-8) and South Bay Northstars (33-31) to secure a place in the tournament’s Final Four championship bracket. In the semifinals they dropped a 43-27 decision to the San Francisco powerhouse Mission Rec Rebels. However, the girls bounced back to beat the Laguna Hills Hawks 35-33 in the third place game and in the process upped their 2005 overall record to 9-2. For the tournament the Genies 12s were led in scoring by Cara Bomar, Kelsi Haugo and Ashton Jones with 34 points apiece. They were followed by Amberlee Tialino (20), Alyssa Heeman (18), Shana Davis (16) and Ashlee Byrd (11). Jones led the team in rebounding with 55, followed by Davis (45), Bomar (43), Tialino (33), Haugo (23), Heeman (21) and Byrd (13). The Genies 10s had the misfortune of drawing two of the country’s top programs in their opening games (Beyond The Rim and San Gabriel Valley), and not surprisingly came out on the short end of one-sided contests. However, their final two games were both competitive, with the Genies falling to the South Bay Northstars (29-27) and charging back from a 22-point first half deficit to close to within five, before ultimately losing to the Santa Monica Surf (39-28). For the tournament the Genies 10s were led in scoring by Elizabeth Rudd with 27 points, followed by Candice Bomar (18), Rebecca Rudd (13), Ashlin Palmer (9), Caitlin Evans (8) and Tessa Smith (6). Smith led the team in rebounding with 28, followed by E. Rudd (18), R. Rudd and Evans (15 each), Palmer (4), Bomar (3) and Michela McGertt (2). The Genies 10s 2005 overall record now stands at 3-7.
