The sixth and seventh grade Genies 12s traveled to Camp Verde this past weekend where they finished in a respectable tie for third place in the Northern Arizona President’s Day Classic eighth grade tournament. For the second straight tournament the Genies were shorthanded, playing with only six and seven players each game, and that combined with the size and age difference of the opposition, proved too much to overcome, as the Genies gave their poorest showing of the year finishing with a 1-2 tournament mark. In the tournament’s first game, turnovers proved to be the team’s undoing as the Genies suited up just six players and committed 19 turnovers en route to a 28-24 defeat at the hands of the Payson Mavericks. The girls bounced back with a lopsided 43-12 victory over the Sedona Sting in the second round to earn a berth in the single elimination Final Four brackets. But in the semi-finals against the Arizona Gym Rats 13s, the Genies produced a lackluster effort from start-to-finish and the result was a one-sided 39-13 defeat. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Kelsi Haugo with 26 points, followed by Cara Bomar (19), Ashton Jones (18), Shana Davis (9), Ashlee Byrd (5) and Alyssa Heeman (4). Jones led the team in rebounding with 25, followed by Bomar (15), Haugo (9), Davis (8), Byrd (7), Tara Rickenbach (5), and Heeman (4). The tournament results drop the Genies 2005 overall record to 14-4.
