Genies 10s Pick Up Second Place Medals at Thunder Tip Off; 12s Finish Third

The Genies U10 team dropped a hard-fought 26-23 decision to the host Arizona Thunder in the championship game of the Thunder Tip Off tournament held at Thunderbird High School. The Thunder jumped to an early 11-1 lead, but the Genies closed the first half with a 10-0 run, tying the score at intermission. In the second half the Thunder repeatedly moved out to small advantages only to have the Genies fight back and close the gap. However, trailing by three with just seconds remaining, the Genies last-chance three-pointer failed to find the mark. For the tournament the Genies were led by Tessa Smith in both scoring and rebounding (33/41), followed by Elizabeth Rudd (32/12), Rebecca Rudd (8/12), Cyndee Flanagan (8/6), Candice Bomar (8/2), Caitlin Evans (6/10), Michela McGertt (2/2), Ashlin Palmer (2/1) and Tenae Henrichs (1/4). The Genies U12 team again proved that with a complete roster in attendance they are clearly the top team in the state. Unfortunately, the full team has only been to five games this season, and playing short-handed for three of the four tournament games this week, again proved their undoing as the team finished in a disappointing third place. In the tournament’s first game and with everyone present, the girls played a solid game in overcoming a tougher-than-expected AZ Stars team 39-34. Cara Bomar led the way recording a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds). However, as the tournament continued and the Genies players dwindled (finishing with just six girls for both Sunday contests), the team split a pair of games with the Elite and the Sting before struggling to a 36-31 overtime loss at the hands of the DFAC Falcons in the tournament semifinals. For the tournament the Genies were led in scoring by Bomar with 39 points, followed by Kelsi Haugo (22), Ashton Jones (18), Amberlee Tialino (14), Shana Davis (13) and Alyssa Heeman and Tara Rickenbach (9 each). Jones led the team in rebounding with 23, followed by Tialino (22), Bomar (20), Heeman (11), Davis (10), Haugo (7) and Rickenbach and Ashlee Byrd (4 each). The Genies 2-2 tournament record moves their 2005 overall mark to 16-6.
