Genies 13s State AAU Championship Run Comes To An End – 11s Finish Second For Third Straight Year

The Genies 13s quest for a third straight AAU state championship ended with a semifinal tournament loss April 9 at Dobson High School in Mesa. Despite losing their first game of the tournament early Saturday morning (39-37 to the Arizona Tru-Ballers), the Genies fought back through the loser’s bracket with three straight victories that same day. In their first victory Mackenzie Flannigan scored 16 points and Ashton Jones and Alyssa Heeman added 14 and 13 respectively to lead the Genies to a 59-34 win over the Arizona Warriors. Just two hours later the Genies got 15 points from Cara Bomar and 13 from Jones to power the team past the AZ Lady Silver Streaks 49-34. Then, in the evening finale, Flannigan posted 18 points and Jones 16 to give the Genies a bit of revenge in a 52-36 rematch victory over the Tru-Ballers. Those three wins propelled the Genies into a Sunday morning quarterfinals match with the Arizona Thunder. There, for the first time in club history, the Genies saw three girls post double-doubles in the same game (Flannigan 20 points/12 rebounds; Jones 14/11 and Bomar 13/12) and the Genies overcame a late eight-point deficit to force overtime before securing a 56-49 win. However, whether due to fatigue, an emotional letdown or simply getting outplayed, the Genies were no match for the eventual tournament champions in the semifinals, ultimately falling 56-22 to the DFAC Falcons. In spite of the disappointing setback, over an oftentimes dominant three-year period, the Genies have posted two firsts and a third in state championship tournament play, and coupled with their 2005 DII Western Nationals Championship, the Genies boast a record unmatched by any other club in their age group. For the six tournament games the Genies were led by Flannigan with 76 points, 55 rebounds, six assists and four steals for 141 Total Stats. She was followed closely by Jones (71+52+9+5=137TS); then Heeman (37+10+31+16=94TS), Bomar 44+36+6+7=93TS), Amberlee Tialino (14+37+14+15=80TS), Kelsi Haugo (21+22+13+6=62TS) and Shana Davis (9+29+6+6=50TS). The Genies 13s 2006 overall record now stands at 20-13. The Genies 11s finished in the runner-up position for the third straight year, after dropping a 43-23 decision to the Arizona Thunder in the championship game. Alex Nicholls topped the Genies with eight points. Previously, the Genies had defeated the AZ Lady Silver Streaks (25-19) behind Tessa Smith’s nine-point effort and the Arizona Elite (45-27) behind 12 points from Elizabeth Rudd and 10 from Nicholls. The team also dropped a 35-15 decision to the Thunder in the second round (Rebecca Rudd was high scorer with five points). For the tournament the Genies were led by Nicholls with 24 points, 32 rebounds, one assist and 18 steals for 77 Total Stats. She was followed by Smith (19+30+4+9=62TS), Elizabeth Rudd (19+21+1+6=47TS), Rebecca Rudd (16+9+6+14=45TS), Jerrica Villescaz (8+13+2+10=33TS), Candice Bomar (13+5+2+2=22TS), Michela McGertt (4+6+4+8=22TS) and Ashlin Palmer (5+0+0+3=8TS). The Genies 11s 2006 overall record now stands at 22-15.
