Genies Sweep To Titles At Arizona Sting Hoopla Event

For the second straight year the Genies 11s and 13s both went undefeated in route to securing their respective age group championships at the Arizona Sting Hoopla tournament, Feb. 3-5 at Hamilton High School and other East Valley sites. Mackenzie Flannigan authored a monster game in the 13U championship tallying 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Genies to a dominating 62-36 victory over the Arizona Thunder. Alyssa Heeman also scored 16 and Cara Bomar added 10 for the Genies. In earlier tournament action, the Genies had rallied from a one-point halftime deficit to defeat the Thunder (42-36) behind Flannigan’s ten point performance, and had raced to an early 21-4 first half lead, before cruising past the North Country Spirit 38-22. Heeman and Flannigan were again the Genies leading scorers with 12 and 10 points respectively. For the tournament Flannigan was the Genies statistical leader with 36 points, 24 rebounds, one assist and three steals for 64 Total Stats. She was followed by Heeman (33+6+12+3=54TS), Tara Rickenbach (9+13+16+9=47TS), Shana Davis (13+18+3+8=42TS), Cara Bomar (19+11+6+4=40TS), Ashton Jones (16+17+0+1=34TS), Kelsi Haugo (12+3+3+6=24TS) and Amberlee Tialino (4+4+1+5=14TS). The Genies 11s won each of their three games by double-digit margins, including a 40-19 victory over the North Country Spirit in the championship. Elizabeth Rudd topped all scorers with 11 points. In the tournament’s first game Candice Bomar scored 13 points and Kishan Cooper added a double-double (10 points; 13 rebounds) to power the Genies to a one-sided 52-18 thumping of the Hoop Angels. In game two it was the Arizona Elite who jumped to a big lead (11-2) midway through the first half before the Genies roared back for a 36-21 victory. Cooper topped the Genies with 10 points. Cooper was also the Genies overall statistical leader for the tournament with 29 points, 28 rebounds, 10 assists and nine steals for 76 Total Stats. She was followed by Alex Nicholls (23+21+3+7=54TS), Elizabeth Rudd (25+13+7+2=47TS), Rebecca Rudd (20+15+5+4=44TS), Jerrica Villescaz (7+12+7+7=33TS), Candice Bomar (18+1+3+6=28TS), Michela McGertt (4+5+2+7=18TS) and Ashlin Palmer (3+1+0+1=5TS). The three tournament victories move the 11s overall record to 10-5.
