Genies Find Goings Tough in California

In between several trips to Disneyland and Universal Studios, the Genies 11s and 13s played a weekend’s worth of high-level basketball at the MLK Tournament in Southern California, but despite being competitive in most every game, came away with only one victory for the entire trip. The 11s started things off with a 51-40 setback at the hands of the Bakersfield Gladiators. Rebecca Rudd led the Genies with 13 points. In game two, the Genies played a back-and-forth contest with the Orange County Rhythm before falling by the count of 44-39. Tessa Smith posted 13 points to lead the Genies. In their third game Candice Bomar scored 15 points and Rebecca Rudd added 14 to power the Genies to a 49-34 victory over the Rancho Lady Heat. Finally, in the tournament’s last game and with only six girls present, the Genies led by three at the half against the Torrance Northstars before running out of gas in the second half and falling 47-36. Rebecca Rudd again led the team with 10 points. For the four game tournament the Genies statistical leader was Smith with 33 points, 28 rebounds, six steals and two assists for 69 Total Stats. She was followed by Rebecca Rudd (44+10+9+5 = 68TS), Alex Nicholls (22+27+6+4 = 59TS), Elizabeth Rudd (23+26+2+2 = 53TS), Candice Bomar (30+4+1+8 = 43TS), Kishan Cooper (8+27+5+1 = 41TS) and Jerrica Villescaz (5+8+3+1 = 17TS). The 11s overall record now stands at 7-5. The Genies 13s lost a couple of last-minute leads in route to a disappointing winless trip. In game one the Genies led highly-regarded San Gabriel Valley by seven points with less than three minutes to play, before a series of turnovers ultimately led to a 44-39 defeat. Cara Bomar led the team with 10 points. In game two, the Genies fought back from an 11-0 deficit to open the game and took a one-point lead midway through the second half before falling 52-48 to the Orange County Rhythm. Bomar again led the team in scoring with 16 points. The third game was the one contest where the Genies did not have an opportunity to win the game at the end. Playing against an extremely physical team from Westchester, the Genies had players dropping like flies from flying bodies and elbows before coming out on the short end of a 52-28 score. Tara Rickenbach led the team with 10 points. Finally, in their final tournament game, the Genies again lost a late lead – this time five points in the last two minutes – and dropped a 60-54 decision to the Santa Monica Surf. Bomar tallied 18 points and Mackenzie Flannigan added 16 to pace the Genies. For the four game tournament the Genies were led by Bomar with 46 points, 16 rebounds, five steals and one assist for 68 Total Stats. She was followed by Flannigan (34+25+7+1 = 67TS), Tara Rickenbach (18+20+9+16 = 63TS), Alyssa Heeman (22+8+10+19 = 59TS), Amberlee Tialino (24+17+7+4 = 52TS), Ashton Jones (12+32+1+1 = 46TS), Shana Davis (9+15+1+3 = 28TS) and Kelsi Haugo (7+8+2+3 = 20 TS). The Genies 13s overall record now stands at 1-6.
