Genies Teams Take 2nd and 4th – Individual Players Shine at Phenoms Tourny

The Genies 11s made their second straight championship game appearance; the 13s again felt the ill-effects of injuries and absences; and individual Genies players showed off their shooting prowess at the 2006 Phoenix Phenoms Spring Shootout, March 31 – April 2. The 11s again proved they are without a doubt the second best 11U team in Arizona, however, the Arizona Thunder hurdle again proved too much to overcome as the Genies fell 48-27 in the championship game, the fourth time the Genies have dropped a title game contest to the Thunder this season. In earlier tournament action the Genies had cruised past the DFAC Falcons (37-9) behind ten point efforts from Tessa Smith and Rebecca Rudd. And following a 44-16 loss to the Thunder, Smith scored off an out-of-bounds play with just seconds to go to give the Genies a 25-23 win over the Arizona Elite. For the four tournament games the Genies were led by Smith with 26 points, 32 rebounds, two assists and five steals for 65 Total Stats. She was followed by Rebecca Rudd (18+16+4+2=40TS), Kishan Cooper (16+16+1+3=36TS), Elizabeth Rudd (14+12+2+6=34TS), Jerrica Villescaz (12+4+1+7=24TS), Alex Nicholls (7+10+0+3=20TS), Ashlin Palmer (9+4+2+0=15TS), Michela McGertt (1+5+7+1=14TS) and Candice Bomar (6+1+0+3=10TS). The 11s overall record now stands at 20-13. The Genies 13s played two of their tournament games with only five players and two others with just one sub. Not surprisingly, they were able to win with the extra body, but ran out of steam with just the five. In their opening game Alyssa Heeman posted a game-high 15 points to lead the team to a 37-33 victory over the AZ Lady Silver Streaks. In game two, the Genies led for much of the game before Alley Rohde’s inside basket with four seconds remaining gave the DFAC Falcons a nail-biting 38-36 win. Ashton Jones scored 13 and Mackenzie Flannigan added 12 to pace the Genies. Later that same evening the Genies got 18 points from Heeman and 14 from Cara Bomar in a 50-25 route of the Arizona Platinum. Finally, in their last game, the Genies stayed with a pressing Arizona Elite team for the first half, before finally running out of gas in the second of a 28-19 loss. For the tournament Flannigan was the Genies statistical leader posting 27 points, 46 rebounds, one assist and four steals for 78 Total Stats. She was followed by Heeman (45+5+13+11=74TS), Jones (31+32+7+3=73TS), Bomar (23+25+4+6=58TS), Shana Davis (10+23+4+2=39TS) and Kelsi Haugo (6+6+3+3=18TS). The Genies 13s overall record now stands at 16-11. In Saturday’s popular noontime intermission shootouts, the Genies fared quite well with Cara Bomar taking first place in the free throw competition (making 9 of 11) and third place in the 3-pt. contest (7 of 18) for the 13s, while Candice Bomar took top honors in the 3-pt. contest (9 of 18) and Ashlin Palmer finished third in the free throw competition (6 of 11) for the 11s.
