Shorthanded Genies 13s Grab Prescott Tournament Title; 11s Fall In Championship Game

Injuries and vacations reduced the Genies 13U team to just five players for the Prescott March Madness tournament March 18-19. But despite having to play four games in 24 hours with no substitutes, the girls found enough energy to capture the tournament title. Alyssa Heeman tied a Genies club record with 22 points and Cara Bomar added three big three-point shots to lift the team to a 40-26 win over the Flagstaff NJB All-Stars in the championship game. The Genies had secured the number one seed by virtue of a 2-1 pool play record. First, they had defeated the North Country Spirit (38-17) behind Heeman’s 16-point performance; next they topped Dilcon Hoop N’ Beauty (33-21) as Ashton Jones posted 14 points and Shana Davis added 12 rebounds. Then, just two hours later, the exhausted five dropped 38-28 defeat at the hands of the All-Stars. Heeman again led the team with eight points. However, with a five-hour break before the championship contest, the girls were rested and ready to compete in the finals. There, the Genies raced to an 18-5 lead after the first quarter, and then withstood a second-half comeback attempt to secure their third tournament championship of 2006. For the tournament the Genies were led by Heeman with 53 points, 10 rebounds, 14 assists and 12 steals for 89 Total Stats. She was followed by Jones (34+29+5+4=72TS), Bomar (27+18+7+9=61TS), Davis (15+29+2+4=50TS) and Amberlee Tialino (14+10+12+12=48TS). The Genies 13s 2006 overall record moves to 14-9. The Genies 11U team also reached the championship game before dropping a hard-fought 33-28 decision to Dilcon Hoop N’ Beauty. The Genies started slowly and trailed by 18 points before mounting a second half comeback that fell just short. Rebecca Rudd led the Genies with 10 points in the title contest. Previously, the Genies had compiled a 3-1 tournament record by defeating the North Country Spirit 11s twice (11-7 and 28-19) and the Spirit 12s (37-11). Sandwiched in between was a loss to Dilcon (29-17). Tessa Smith was the Genies leading scorer in each of those games and finished the tournament with 37 points, 32 rebounds, two assists and eight steals for 79 Total Stats. She was followed by Kishan Cooper (20+42+5+9=76TS), Rebecca Rudd (21+15+4+14=54TS), Alex Nicholls (19+24+1+9=53TS), Elizabeth Rudd (7+16+1+5=29TS), Jerrica Villescaz (5+8+3+5=21TS), Candice Bomar (7+5+3+2=17TS) and Ashlin Palmer (5+2+2+4=13TS). The Genies 11s 2006 overall record now stands at 18-11. At the conclusion of the tournament, the 13s Heeman and Tialino and the 11s Smith and Cooper were all named to the all-tournament team.
