The Genies 13s overcame the slowdown tactics of the Arizona Premier not once, but twice in route to the championship of the Valentine’s Invitational, Feb. 10-12 at Dobson High School. In the tournament’s first game Cara Bomar converted four three-pointers and finished with a career-high 22 points to lead the Genies past the Arizona Stars Tru-Ballers 44-33. Game two was a battle of conflicting styles with the Premier seeking to control the tempo and the Genies looking to run at every opportunity. Sparked by Mackenzie Flannigan’s game-high ten points, the result was a 29-17 Genies victory which gave them a spot in Sunday’s championship game. In the championship (a rematch with the Premier), the Premier played at an even more deliberate pace, oftentimes possessing the ball for upwards of 90 seconds before attempting a shot, but the result was the same: another 12-point Genies victory, 22-10. Flannigan and Alyssa Heeman were high scorers with seven points each. For the tournament Flannigan and Bomar tied for the team lead with 28 points and Flannigan was the overall statistical leader, posting an additional 14 rebounds, one assist and eight steals for 51 Total Stats. Bomar was next with (28+9+3+5=45TS), followed by Tara Rickenbach (9+10+9+9=37TS), Heeman (11+7+10+4=32TS), Ashton Jones (12+9+2+6=29TS), Shana Davis (3+14+1+1=19TS), Kelsi Haugo (4+3+1+4=12TS) and Amberlee Tialino (0+6+0+1=7TS). Since returning from their tough California road trip the Genies have now won seven in a row to move their overall record to 8-6. The Genies 11s also made it to the championship game before dropping a hotly contested 27-24 decision to the Arizona Thunder. In the finale the Genies held a seven-point halftime lead, and trailed by only one with 30 seconds left in the contest, before Candice Bomar’s potential game-winning layup was blocked from behind by the Thunder’s Courtney Latham. Tessa Smith led the Genies with eight points in the championship game. In earlier tournament action the Genies had topped the DFAC Falcons (32-20, Bomar was the leading scorer with eight points), lost to the Thunder (28-16, Smith was the leading scorer with 10 points) and defeated the Arizona Elite (23-22, Rebecca Rudd, Alex Nicholls and Bomar tied for the team lead with five points each). Smith was the team’s overall statistical leader with 26 points, 36 rebounds and seven steals for 69 Total Stats. She was followed by Nicholls (17+23+3+6=49TS), Kishan Cooper (11+25+0+4=40TS), Jerrica Villescaz (7+15+1+5=28TS), Elizabeth Rudd (11+12+2+2=27TS), Candice Bomar (15+0+2+5=22TS), Rebecca Rudd (7+2+1+2=12TS) and Ashlin Palmer (1+1+0+0=2TS). The 11s overall record now stands at 12-7.
