For the fourth straight year the Genies 12U team finished in the runner-up position at the AAU State Championships held April 6-7 at Dobson High School in Mesa. In the finals, the Genies hung with the Arizona Thunder for much of the contest, trailing by just one point at the half and by only four with eight minutes to play, before ultimately dropping a hard-fought 52-41 decision. Cortnee Walton's 12-point, 12-rebound effort led the Genies. On Friday night the Genies opened the tournament with a pair of one-sided victories. First, Megan Crenshaw and Tessa Smith went a combined 10-of-10 from the floor and scored 16 and 10 points respectively, as the Genies raced to a 57-9 win over the Westside Swoosh. Just over an hour later, Walton posted her first double-double of the tournament (16 points; 11 rebounds) and Smith added 12 points as the Genies overwhelmed the North Country Spirit by the count of 46-24. After dropping a 51-25 decision to the Thunder in Saturday's first contest, Janai Mitchell posted 17 points and Walton chipped in 10 as the Genies blew past the Lady AZ Silver Streaks 59-22 in an early afternoon semifinal encounter to set up the title rematch with the Thunder. This marks the fourth straight year the Genies have finished second to the Thunder in the state title game. For the five game tournament the Genies were led by Walton with 51 points, 34 rebounds, three steals and eight assists for 96 Total Stats. She was followed by Smith (38+23+12+11=84 TS), Mitchell (39+19+6+0=64TS), Crenshaw (34+14+13+1=62TS), Rebecca Rudd (8+10+10+17=45TS), Elizabeth Rudd (15+13+3+7=38TS), Shelly Goglio (11+13+5+2=31TS), Kaylee Snider (14+7+7+2=30TS), Candice Bomar (12+8+3+6=29TS) and Alex Nicholls (9+7+7+2=25TS). The Genies overall record now stands at 28-10.
