Triple digit summertime temperatures are a sure sign the club basketball season is coming to a close. And with temps hovering above 110 degrees for much of the weekend, both Genies teams prepared to wrap-up successful 2007 campaigns at the inaugural AZ Best Tournament at Shadow Mountain High School. The Genies 12U team was in fact playing their final games of the season, and once again looked to challenge themselves by playing up in the high school Junior Varsity division..........In their first game of the tournament they dropped a close encounter with the Arizona Best JV team, 38-33. Cortnee Walton led the team with 13 points..........In game two, the Genies rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to top the Triple G 14U team by the count of 35-25. Tessa Smith scored 15 points and Megan Crenshaw added 12 to lead the Genies in scoring..........Game three was a rematch with their previous week’s championship opponent, the Arizona Venom 13U girls. And much like the previous week, the Genies kept it close with the Venom for most of the first half, before falling by the score of 53-27. Walton again paced the Genies with 15 points..........Lastly, in their final game of the tournament and the season, the Genies fell to the Best JV by the score of 49-33. Smith and Walton each scored 10 points. For the four-game tournament the Genies were led by Walton with 40 points, one steal, 27 rebounds and six assists for 74 Total Stats. She was followed by Smith (35+5+26+2=68TS), Crenshaw (21+5+7+2=35TS), Elizabeth Rudd (13+2+6+4=25TS), Shelly Goglio (5+6+5+0=16TS), Rebecca Rudd (2+5+6+3=16TS), Kaylee Snider (4+1+8+0=13TS) and Candice Bomar (9+0+1+2=12TS). After the tournament Smith and Walton were both named to the all-tournament team. The Genies 12s finish the 2007 season with a record of 44-15..........The Genies 14U team has its eyes set on Orlando, where their final tournament of the season will be the AAU Division II National Championships July 10-16. However, injuries and travel schedules reduced the team to just five available 14-year-olds for this weekend’s tournament, so the team was augmented by Walton, Smith and Crenshaw to give the team some substitutes. Still the mixed 12U/14U team fared quite well in the Varsity division, sweeping through pool play undefeated before losing in the semi-finals to finish in third place..........In game one Cara Bomar sank four second-half three-pointers and finished with a game-high 14 points to lead the Genies to a 39-27 win over the Hot Shots. Christine Steveson added 11 points and Ashton Jones grabbed 12 rebounds in the win..........Game two saw the Genies break open a tight first half game and race to a 36-17 win over the Arizona Best. Bomar led the team with 10 points..........In the their last pool game against the Boulder Creek Lady Jags, the Genies trailed by one at halftime, but put together a convincing second half to secure a 40-29 victory. Bomar paced the team with 11 points..........Finally, with a championship game berth on the line, the Genies fell behind the Best early and could never recover in a 58-35 defeat. Bomar tallied 16 points to lead the Genies in a losing effort..........For the four tournament games the Genies were led by Bomar with 51 points, eight steals, 16 rebounds and eight assists for 83 Total Stats. She was followed by Stevenson (30+3+25+10=68TS), Jones (25+4+29+7=65TS), Kelsi Haugo (14+8+14+13=49TS), Smith (15+5+9+1=30TS), Walton (8+1+15+5=29TS), Shana Davis (5+3+19+1=28TS) and Crenshaw (2+1+5+3=11TS). After the tournament Bomar and Stevenson were named to the all-tournament team. The Genies will head to Orlando with an overall record of 26-12.
