Genies 14s Finish 2-2 at First NCAA Viewing Tournament

With college coaches wandering from game-to-game, and an NBA Hall of Famer sitting courtside, the Genies 14U club went 2-2 in the 15U division against teams from four different states at the 28.5 April Jam tournament hosted by the Arizona Elite, April 13-15 at numerous Valley locations. In their first game Friday night, the Genies used a suffocating full court defense to overwhelm the Illinois Hoopla by the count of 42-30. The Genies dominated the action from start-to-finish and were led in scoring by Christine Stevenson with eight points. Later that same night at ASU’s Wells Fargo Arena, and with former Utah Jazz and all-time NBA assist leader John Stockton coaching in the game immediately proceeding the Genies, the Nevada Basketball Academy jumped to a nine-point halftime lead, and kept basically the same margin throughout the second half of a 37-28 win. Alyssa Heeman paced the Genies with 10 points. On Saturday, the Genies fought back from a seven-point halftime deficit to take a one-point lead with just minutes to play before dropping a 36-32 decision to the Sacramento Sting. Ausha Cole led the Genies with eight points. Finally, in their last game, the Genies beat the Arizona Lady Cobras by the count of 28-23, with Stevenson leading another balanced Genies scoring attack with seven points. For the four game tournament Heeman and Ashton Jones both posted 23 total points. They were followed by Stevenson and Cole (19 each), Cara Bomar (16), Amberlee Tialino and Kelsi Haugo (8 each), Shana Davis (7) and Cortnee Walton (4). The Genies head into this weekend’s 14U AAU State Championships having played at least one age division “up” in 16 of their 17 games this season, while compiling a record of 11-6.
