After three solid performances on Saturday, the Genies 12s looked less than sharp in Sunday’s title contest, but still played well enough to defeat the Arizona Lady Hoopers 25-15 to claim the Arizona Sting Hoopla tournament championship at Basha High School, the Genies third straight Hoopla title. In the final game the Genies faced a one-point halftime deficit before rallying for the win behind pressure defense and balanced scoring. No player scored over four points, but the team’s collective effort led to the victory. A day earlier the Genies had cruised to three relatively easy wins to reach the championship. In game one, the Genies jumped to a 14-point first half lead before finishing off the Arizona Premier by the count of 43-23. Janai Mitchell scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Genies. In Saturday’s semi-final matchup with the Lady Hoopers, the Genies got double-doubles from both Walton (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Tessa Smith (13 points, 12 rebounds) as they won by the count of 38-21. For the four-game tournament the Genies were led by Walton with 27 points, 36 rebounds, seven steals and three assists for 73 Total Stats.
