Genies Finish 1st and 2nd at Jamboree

In between working scorebooks, game clocks, admission gates and concession stands at their own tournament, both Genies teams managed to reach their respective championship games at the 2007 Genies Jamboree – with the 12U Genies winning the title and the 14U Genies finishing second. The Genies 12s started things off with a couple of one-sided wins, racing to large halftime leads in each of a 29-18 victory over Triple G and a 52-18 win over the Lady Hoopers. The Genies allowed a total of only seven points combined in the games’ two first halves. Cortnee Walton paced the team in both contests scoring eight points with 10 rebounds in game one; and 12 points in game two. In their semifinal match-up with the AZ Lady Silver Streaks, it was Walton again scoring a team-high 16 points to lead the Genies to a 40-25 victory. In Sunday’s championship encounter with the Arizona Venom, Tessa Smith tallied 12 points and Megan Crenshaw added 10 to power the Genies to a 43-34 win and the tournament title. The four wins improve the Genies 12s 2007 overall record to 36-10.................The Genies 14s also cruised through their first three games of the combined 14U/15U bracket to reach the championship game. In game number one the Genies held the Thunder-Select to just three first half points before finishing off a 49-13 win. Shana Davis led the team with 12 points. In game two, another fine defensive effort limited the Phoenix Phenoms to just six first half points, before the Genies went on to a 55-21 victory. Ausha Cole scored 15 points, Christine Stevenson added 13 and Ashton Jones gathered 10 rebounds to lead the Genies. In the semifinals the Genies built a 13-point second half lead before finishing off the Arizona Thunder by the count of 35-28. Stevenson was high scorer with nine points. However, in the championship game with the Arizona Premier 15U, the Genies could not get the offense going and finished a dismal 5-17 from the free throw line in a 29-15 loss. Their 3-1 tournament mark ups the Genies 14s 2007 overall mark to 21-9................... At the conclusion of the tournament the 12s Walton and the 14s Stevenson were named to the all-tournament team. Also, at Saturdays’s noontime intermission, the Genies 12s walked away with the Spirit Competition first place trophy (photo above).
