Everything came up roses for the Genies at the May Madness tournament May 4-6, with both the 12s and 14s going undefeated in sweeping to their respective titles. The 12-year-olds (pictured above) started things off Friday night with a 41-32 win over the Triple G team. Elizabeth Rudd sank her final six shots from the field and finished with 13 points to lead the Genies, while Janai Mitchell chipped in 10. The following day Rudd picked up right where she had left off the night before by making her first five shots of the game in a 59-11 route of the Tucson Xtreme, and in the process set a Genies club record with a two-game streak of 11 consecutive made field goals. Cortnee Walton led all scorers in the contest with 14 points, while Rudd finished with 11. In the tournament semifinals against the Lady Arizona Silver Streaks, Tessa Smith bulled her way to a game-high 12 points as the Genies jumped all over the Streaks by the count of 47-21. Lastly, in a championship game rematch with the Silver Streaks, the Genies built a ten-point second half lead, but uncharacteristically missed a large number of uncontested layups before finishing with a 25-20 victory. Walton paced the team with eight points. For the four-game tournament the Genies were led by Rudd and Walton with 30 points each. They were followed by Smith (28), Mitchell (25), Megan Crenshaw (23), Shelly Goglio (9), Candice Bomar, Alex Nicholls and Kaylee Snider (7 each) and Rebecca Rudd (4). The Genies 12s 2007 overall record now stands at 32-10. The Genies 14U squad once again played up in the 15U division and came away with a 4-0 mark and the tournament championship. In their first game, the Genies posted a team defensive first by holding their opponent, the Arizona Dynasty, without a basket for the entire game. The Dynasty mustered only six made free throws in a 36-6 defeat. Ausha Cole led a balanced scoring attack with seven points as every Genies player scored. In game two the Genies raced past Arizona Thunder-Carlise by the score of 46-25. Christine Stevenson and Alyssa Heeman each tallied nine points to lead the Genies. In the tournament semifinal match-up with the Phoenix Phenoms, the Genies saw a 10-point halftime lead turn into a 10-point second half deficit before rallying for a 49-46 comeback win. Cole and Ashton Jones both posted 10 points to lead the Genies in scoring. Finally, in Sunday’s final contest, Stevenson again tallied nine points as the Genies defeated the Arizona Lady Cobras by the score of 36-31 to claim the tournament championship. For the four tournament games the Genies were led in scoring by Stevenson with 31. She was followed by Heeman (30), Cole (25), Jones (23), Cara Bomar (18), Amberlee Tialino and Kelsi Haugo (16 each) and Shana Davis (8). The Genies 14s 2007 overall record now stands at 18-8.
