Genies Go 4-1On California Road Trip

The Genies 12U team posted a 4-1 record at the UPG Memorial Weekend Classic May 26-28 in Santa Ana, with the team’s only loss coming in a closely contested game with the eventual tournament champions. All games in the 13-team 12U division were played at California prep sports powerhouse Mater Dei High School, so prior to their first game the Genies were able to check out the school’s Hall of Fame which featured such standouts as Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart and former Arizona Wildcats hoop stars Miles Simon and Reggie Geary. But after touring the Hall the girls got down to business with a first-round victory over the Bakersfield Heat. Cortnee Walton and Elizabeth Rudd each scored eight points and Walton added 10 rebounds as the Genies raced to a 12-point halftime lead and never looked back in a 34-26 win. The Genies next opponent was the highly regarded Orange County Rhythm, a team ranked as one of the top 12U teams in Southern California. The Genies jumped to an early lead and trailed by only five at the half. Midway through the second half the Genies had closed to within one point, but the team's season-long problem at the free throw line again came into play, and as the Genies missed shot-after-shot the Rhythm went into a delay-game, eventually forcing the Genies to foul. The Rhythm sank crucial free throws at the end to wrap up a 35-25 victory. The Genies finished the game 3-for-16 at the line. Walton led the Genies with eight points. However, after that hard-fought loss, the Genies bounced right back to win their final three games: 43-28 over the 29 Palms Wildcats (Janai Mitchell, nine points); 31-28 over the Lady AZ Silver Streaks (Tessa Smith, eight points); and 30-22 over the Orange County Elite (Walton, 11 points). For the tournament the Genies were led by Walton with 40 points. She was followed by Smith (30), Mitchell (26), Alex Nicholls (13), Shelly Goglio (12), Kaylee Snider and Rebecca Rudd (11 each), Megan Crenshaw and Elizabeth Rudd (10 each) and Candice Bomar (3). The Genies 2007 overall record now stands at 40-11.
