Looking for tougher competition than that found so far this season at their own age group, the Genies 12s again played “up” over the MLK holiday weekend, this time finishing in fifth place in the eight-team eighth grade tournament at the Salvation Army facility in Phoenix. The 11- and 12-year-old Genies first squared off with the Arizona Thunder 13U team. Despite falling behind by 10 points at the half, the Genies fought back to within three late in the game before eventually falling by the count of 31-22. The team shot a dismal 2-for-12 from the free throw line to help seal its own fate. Cortnee Walton led the Genies with eight points. In game two, the Genies self-destructed against the powerful Arizona Thunder 12U team. Turnovers and foul problems were the order of the day, and although the Genies managed to stay within six at the half, they were never in the game in the second half and lost 38-27. Elizabeth Rudd and Tessa Smith each tallied seven points to lead the team in scoring. Finally, in the fifth place game, the Genies led from start to finish in beating the Granite Mountain Grizzlies 8th grade team 34-25. Walton again led the team in scoring with 11 points. The Genies overall record now stands at 8-4.
