The final standings may show the Genies 12U squad finished in fifth place at the 16-team SGV Invitational over the President’s Day weekend, but the reality is, the Genies quite possibly may have been the third best team there. The Genies finished with a 3-2 record in the Silver Division, with their only two losses coming to the two teams which ended up playing for the tournament championship: California powerhouses SGV and Mission Rec. Not only that, but both defeats were hard-fought contests that with a break here or there could have gone the other way. The Genies opened the tournament against their hosts from San Gabriel Valley. The Genies trailed by one at the half and were close throughout the second half before falling to SGV, the eventual tournament champions, by the count of 34-29. Later that same day, the Genies led most of the game before hanging on for a 27-25 win over the Irvine Warriors. Then, needing a final victory in pool play to advance to the championship bracket, the Genies pulled out a 29-25 win over the San Pedro Knights. That set up a meeting with San Francisco’s top girl’s basketball club, the Mission Rec Center Rebels. The Genies fell behind by 12 points at the half, and looked to have met their match. However, a furious rally late in the second half cut the gap to five points and brought the Genies fan contingent to their feet. Mission Rec called a timeout to stop the momentum, but the Genies forced a quick steal and scored again to close to within three points with less than five minutes to play. But that was as close as they could get, and the girls eventually lost by the score of 48-39. In Sunday’s fifth place game against Cal Sparks, the #1 seed from Pool C, the Genies gave up only five second half points in a convincing 39-19 victory. For the five game tournament the Genies were led by Cortnee Walton with 39 points, 48 rebounds, 10 steals and five assists for 102 Total Stats. She was followed by Janai Mitchell (30+27+1+0=58TS), Tessa Smith (23+15+4+2=44TS), Megan Crenshaw (12+16+5+3=36TS), Shelly Goglio (16+13+3+3=35TS), Elizabeth Rudd (12+12+1+2=27TS), Rebecca Rudd (6+5+4+11=26TS), Kaylee Snider (8+10+3+1=22TS), Candice Bomar (12+1+1+2=16TS) and Alex Nicholls (5+6+0+0=11TS). The Genies 2007 overall record now stands at 19-6.
