The Genies 12U team, fresh off a successful stint in the Highland summer league where they compiled a 6-2 record against high school junior varsity squads, moved up in competition again and finished in second place in the 13U division of the Arizona Sun Hoops tournament, June 15-17 at Dobson High in Mesa........... The Genies started things off Friday night with a closer-than-expected 25-22 win over the Arizona Lady Hoopers. Megan Crenshaw led the team in scoring with 12 points. On Saturday, the Genies got off to another slow start, spotting the New Mexico Braves an early 10-point lead before closing to within one at halftime. The second half went back and forth several times before the Genies wrapped up a 46-41 win. Cortnee Walton scored 16 points and Crenshaw added 10 to pace the Genies.......... Sunday was Father’s Day and for all the Genies dads who may have been hoping for that heretofore elusive gift of a victory over the rival Arizona Thunder team, their wish was granted – and in exciting fashion. The game was close throughout and the two teams went to the halftime break tied at 28. The Thunder forged a five-point lead with just a minute to go, but strong defensive play, some clutch foul shooting (the Genies made 22 of 31 for the game) and Tessa Smith’s dramatic three-point shot from the corner with seven seconds remaining forced overtime with the teams deadlocked at 50-50. In overtime, the Genies fought to a two-point lead and had possession of the ball when Rebecca Rudd was fouled with 13 seconds remaining. Rabbit calmly sank both shots and the Genies held on for a 56-52 win. Walton scored a season-high 18 points and collected 11 rebounds, while Smith finished with 13 points and Elizabeth Rudd added 10.......... In the championship game later that afternoon, the Genies stayed with the quick and talented Arizona Venom 13U team for most of the first half, before the Venom pulled away for a 65-39 win. Smith led the Genies with 10 points.......... For the four tournament games the Genies were led by Walton with 49 points. She was followed by Smith (32), Crenshaw (27), E. Rudd (22), R. Rudd (14), Shelly Goglio (13), Candice Bomar (7) and Kaylee Snider (2). The Genies 3-1 tournament mark moves their 2007 overall record to 43-12.
