The Genies 12s renewed their rivalry with their tournament hosts, the Arizona Thunder, and proved once again that when rested and playing their best they are capable of giving the Thunder squad all they can handle. But the Genies also showed what can happen when you play three games in four hours, and don’t bring your “A” game against the defending state champions -- the result was a one-sided loss in the championship contest. The Genies started things off Friday night with a closer than expected match-up with the Phoenix Phenoms. The Genies saw a seven-point lead turn into a one-point deficit in the final few minutes and needed two clutch free throws from Candice Bomar with less than 30 seconds remaining to eke out a 30-29 win. Janai Mitchell led the Genies with eight points and eight rebounds. The following day the Genies used a 10-point, eight-rebound performance by Megan Crenshaw to cruise past the Arizona Lady Silver Streaks, 37-19. In Sunday’s first game, a semi-final contest with the Thunder, the morning-fresh Genies trailed by just one point at halftime and kept the game close throughout, before falling by the count of 27-20. Elizabeth Rudd scored six points and Cortnee Walton pulled down 10 rebounds for the Genies. Just one hour later Tessa Smith scored 16 points and the Genies raced to a big early lead before defeating the Arizona Venom 40-17. Finally, in the championship game and again just one hour later, the Genies fell behind early and never recovered in dropping a 48-23 decision to the Thunder. For the five-game tournament the Genies were led by Walton with 25 points, She was followed by Smith (23), Crenshaw (22), Elizabeth Rudd (18), Mitchell (18), Kaylee Snider (14), Rebecca Rudd (12), Bomar (10), Alex Nicholls (8) and Shelly Goglio (2). The Genies 2007 overall record now stands at 22-8.
