The Genies 12U team will take a nine-game win streak to California next week after sweeping through the Valentine Invitational with a perfect 4-0 mark March 9-11 at the Arizona Premier facility in Gilbert. The tournament championship was their second straight after capturing first place honors two weeks ago at the Arizona Sting Hoopla event. At the Valentine tournament the Genies used pressure full-court defense throughout their four games to wear down their opponents, and surrendered an average of just 18 points per contest. The girls started things off with a 36-26 win over the host Premier. Cortnee Walton led the Genies with 14 points and nine rebounds. In game two the Genies suffocating defense led the team to a 20-9 halftime lead against the Phoenix Phenoms before virtually shutting them down in the second half of a 32-14 win. Game three saw the Genies struggle early in the first half, missing numerous layups and put-backs against the Tucson Xtreme. However, after concentrating on running their zone offense, the team recovered sufficiently to build an 11-point halftime lead and cruised to a 30-15 win. Then, in the tournament’s championship contest, a rematch with the Premier, the Genies scored ten points off set out-of-bounds plays on their way to a 35-17 victory. For the tournament the team was led by Walton with 40 points, 29 rebounds, three assists and eight steals for 80 Total Stats. She was followed by Janai Mitchell (20+22+1+6=49TS), Tessa Smith (22+13+4+5=44TS), Megan Crenshaw (16+9+1+10=36TS), Alex Nicholls (7+14+0+6=27TS), Candice Bomar (12+5+2+4+23TS), Elizabeth Rudd (9+6+1+3=19TS), Kaylee Snider (4+8+0+5=17TS) and Rebecca Rudd (3+3+3+5=14TS). The four tournament wins up the Genies 2007 overall mark to 16-4. Next up for the girls is the highly regarded San Gabriel Valley tournament in Southern California over the President’s Day weekend.
