Over the summer, whenever I saw someone with ties to the JC world, I posted the highlights on this page.
This summer began with a couple of trips to Santa Barbara to see the Breakers of the IBL. Later on, there was the Say No Classic league, and I made a couple of trips north for San Francisco Bay Area Pro-Am action. It all concluded with the final game of the Real Run season at Inglewood HS.
There was also the Fullcourt Press JC Camp July 7-8, the 3 Stripes JC Shootout July 13-14-15, the Fullcourt Press Last Chance JUCO Showcase July 28th and the Hoop Review Shootout July 30-31. Summaries for these events are linked at the bottom of the page.
August 17: Real Run (@ Inglewood HS)
PF Deon Marcus (Pasadena CC) had 18 pts, all on 6 threes, and PG Mark Peters (San Bernardino Valley/UC Riverside) had 15 pts and 5 asts to lead The Stars to a 102-72 win over The Bulls.
There was a free-flowing nature to the evening, and at one point what turned out to be the second quarter was supposed to be the second half of the first of two games. And the Stars trailed, 40-37, before a Marcus 3-pointer with 5 seconds left tied the game and sent it to an overtime that eventually became a complete second half when the second game was cancelled.
Marcus made 5 more threes in what became the third quarter as The Stars built a 15-point lead and cruised to the win.
August 11: Say No Classic (@ The Point - Hollywood)
SF T.J. Smith (Chaffey/Kentucky Wesleyan) had 23 pts, 6 rebs and 3 asts but it wasn't quite enough to get No Schnacks past a strong Hank's Franchise Boys squad in the championship game.
Smith had the second-highest scoring total in the game, outscored only by UCLA standout Darren Collison, who had 26 pts. But No Schnacks fell, 100-83, in the final after becoming the first Pomona-based team in the Say No league to reach the championship game.
Ctr Jason McClure (Chaffey/Dickinson State) had 2 pts and 5 rebs off the bench for No Schnacks, while SF Je'Marc Perry (Riverside/Jarvis Christian) had 1 point and 1 rebound.
For the winners and league champions, Ctr Danny Gray (Ventura/Utah State) came off the bench and though he did not score, he did grab 3 rebounds.
August 9: San Francisco Pro-Am:
In one of the most entertaining games in the dozen or so years I've watched the SF Pro-Am, Ctr Johnny Dukes (San Bernardino Valley/University of San Francisco) had 25 pts, a game-high 12 rebs and 8 asts to lead SF City to a 126-124 upset win over Bay Pride in the league semifinal.
The pace was relentless as both teams played an up-tempo game with a lot of scoring (Pro-Am games are 40 minutes so this would be like a game around 152-149 in an NBA-like 48 minutes). And the lead went back and forth numerous times before the University of San Francisco's Dior Lowhorn drove into the paint and knocked down a short jumper with 7.4 seconds left to break a 124-all tie and give his squad the win.
SF City entered the playoffs with a 4-3 record, but with upset wins this week over Dream Team and Bay Pride has landed a berth in the finals, which begin next Monday.
Bay Pride lost despite a 39-point, 13-assist performance from former Santa Clara standout Doron Perkins, who drained a game-tying three moments before Lowhorn's game-winning shot. Bay Pride, the team NBA star Jason Kidd played for in the 1990s, finishes with a 7-2 record after finishing in a tie for the top spot in the regular season.
Dukes was the only JC alumn in the game, but there were numerous outstanding performances. PG Jerome Randle (Cal) had 27 pts and 14 asts for the winners. Lowhorn had 26 pts and SG Austin Nichols (Humboldt State/France) had 25. For Bay Pride, former USF star Darryl Tucker, who played for Tri-Valley in the IBL this season, had 27 pts and 8 rebs.
August 7: San Francisco Pro-Am:
Ctr Johnny Dukes (San Bernardino Valley/University of San Francisco) had 24 pts and PF Marek Ondara (Skyline/Mira Costa/UC Irvine/Denmark) posted a double-double to lead SF City to a 104-98 win over Dream Team in the first round of the SF Pro-Am Playoffs.
Dukes had the 24 pts plus 7 rebs and a team-high 5 asts for City, which finished the game on a 14-7 run to get the win. And Ondara had 13 pts and a game-high 15 rebs.
For Dream Team, SG Cordell Butler (Southern Idaho/Utah State/IBL) had 25 pts plus 8 rebs and 7 asts. Ctr Eric Crookshank (Chabot/Idaho State/Italy) had 20 pts and 7 rebs. PF Mike Travis (CC San Francisco/Jackson State) did not score but grabbed 2 rebs.
Prior to the game, it was announced that SF Maurice (Mo) Brown (CC San Francisco/IBL) was named the 2007 SF Pro-Am Most Valuable Player. This is the second MVP award in this league for Brown, who led Oakland to a first-place finish this season. He also captured the honor in 2003 while playing for Dream Team.
August 5: Say No Classic (@ The Point - Hollywood)

August 4: Say No Classic (@ The Point - Hollywood)

July 29: Say No Classic (@ Cal Poly Pomona)
The final day of the regular season saw a pair of upset scramble the playoff seeds, resulting in a three-way tie for the two final playoff spots. The league will now have to figure out the tie-breaker to determine which teams will advance to the playoffs, which begin next week.
In the day's first game, Hank's Toros entered the game in first place with a 7-0 record but dropped a 59-55 decision to Pomona, losing the #1 playoff seed in the process.
PG Mike Hernandez (Rio Hondo/Santa Ana/CS Dominguez Hills) had 12 pts and 4 asts for the Toros, and PF Jamaal Barnes (Compton/CSDH) had 9 pts and 5 rebs. Ctr Jerrell Smith (Fullerton/Riverside/CSDH) had 6 pts and 6 rebs, as did SG Ryan Walton (Compton/CSDH).
For Pomona, PG Rich Collins (Barstow/Cal Poly Pomona) had just one point to go with his team-high 4 assists, but it was a key one as his free throw with 13 seconds left made it a two-possession game and basically clinched the win for Pomona. The victory improves Pomona's record to 6-2, clinching the #3 playoffs seed from the IE division.
The second game saw CABC outscore The Coyotes 45-19 in the second half to romp to an easy win. PF Chris Childress (Santa Ana/Colorado State) came off the bench for the winners and had one point, 4 rebs and 2 asts.
The Coyotes, a team made up of players now at Cal State San Bernardino, was led by SG Steve Gaston (LA Southwest), who came off the bench and scored 10 pts. Ctr Joe Tillman (Mt. No Schnacks led all the way. Ctr LaRon Williams (Chaffey/Jarvis Christian) came off the bench to score 8 pts and grab 4 rebs. SF Je'marc Perry (Riverside) had 4 pts and though Ctr Jason McClure (Chaffey) did not score he did grab 5 rebs.
For Say No, SF Terrance Hundley led the way with 17 pts, 6 rebs and 6 asts. SG Bo Harrison (San Bernardino Valley) had 12 pts and 3 asts. And in the finale, PF Eric Williams (Long Beach/Tarleton State) had 26 pts and 7 rebs to lead the SoCal Warriors to a 66-62 win over Pasadena, knotting the standings with a 3-way tie for 4th place with the top 6 teams advancing to the playoffs.

July 22: Say No Classic (@Cal Poly Pomona)
For the second straight day, an underdog with just 5 players available pulled the upset in the final game of the day as PF Eric Williams (Long Beach/Tarleton State) had 26 pts and 11 rebs, leading the SoCal Warriors to a 75-72 overtime win over CABC.
The Warriors trailed by as many as 19 points late in the first half, but rallied in the third quarter to cut the margin to just 2 points by the beginning of the fourth quarter. The lead went back and forth in the final quarter and in overtime before the Warriors pulled out the narrow win.
SG Barry Barnes (Long Beach) had 13 pts and a team-high 6 asts for the winners, which improved their record to 4-3.
For CABC, which entered the game in third place in the league with a 4-1 record, PF Chris Childress (Santa Ana/Colorado State) had 4 pts, 5 rebs and a game-high 8 asts.
But that wasn't the biggest upset of the day. The real stunner came when Hank's Bakersfield Boys knocked off previously-undefeated No Schnacks, a team featuring UCLA star Darren Collison, 74-72, in the day's second game.
PF Santwon Latunde (Cowley/CS Bakersfield) scored the winning basket from about 10 feet out after rebounding a miss in the final seconds. That capped a frantic final sequence that saw No Schnacks wipe out a 6-point deficit in the final minute.
Latunde finished with 19 pts and a game-high 13 rebs. SF Terrance Johns (Bakersfield/CS Bakersfield) had a game-high 26 pts for the winners, which improved their record to 3-4. PF Donald Lee (LA Pierce/CS Bakersfield) had 10 pts and 4 rebs.

July 21: Say No Classic (@ The Point - Hollywood)
In the most entertaining game of the day, SF Thurman Sutton (LA Harbor/Utah Valley State) scored 21 of his 27 pts in the second half and also grabbed 10 rebs in the game to help the Hoops Family to a stunning 93-83 win over previously-undefeated Hank's Franchise Boys in Saturday's finale.
With just 5 players available - four of whom arrived moments before tip-off - things looked bleak for the Hoops Family. Also, the Franchise Boys seemed to have a huge size advantage with three starters taller than 6-8 while the Hoops Family had one one taller than 6-2.
But the Hoops Family pushed the pace and used its quickness to pull the upset. Sutton scored repeatedly in the open court and near the basket to fuel a third-quarter surge that saw the Hoops Family rally from a 1-point halftime deficit to take a 10-point lead.
PG Jonathan Smith (Santa Monica/Western Georgia) also had a strong game for the winners with 15 pts and 3 asts.
For the Franchise Boys, Ctr Danny Gray (Ventura/Utah State) saw brief action but did not score.

July 20: Say No Classic (@ The Point - Hollywood)
Ctr James Silvie (Cabrillo/Santa Ana/Hawaii-Hilo) had 23 pts and 6 rebs but it wasn't quite enough to lift his team to the win as Sinclair's Bruins fell to Salvatori's Spirit, 89-79. Silvie easily led his team in scoring, and also got some help from PF Dejean Prejean (LA City/Cal State LA), who had 14 pts, and SG Leon Jacob (Compton/LA Pierce/Utah Valley State), who had 5 pts. SF Justin Williams (Santa Ana/Sacramento State) had 10 pts for the victorious Spirit, while PF Andrew Green (Sequoias/CS Fullerton) had 9 pts and 4 rebs. Taylor also started for last year's champion team. SF Gerard Anderson (Saddleback/CS Fullerton) started for Belmont Shores and had 8 pts and 4 rebs.
June 30: Say No Classic (@ The Point - Hollywood)
SF Thurman Sutton (LA Harbor/Utah Valley State) scored 17 points, including the final 5 points of the game to break a 77-77 tie and lead Hoop Family to an 82-77 win in the finale of the first Saturday of action at The Point.
With the score tied and under 30 seconds left, Sutton deflected the ball away and to teammate Jerard Moret (West LA), who passed back to Sutton for a dunk to make it 79-77 with 26 seconds left. Then, after a missed shot, Sutton grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and made a free throw with 11.6 seconds left to make it 80-77. June 27: San Francisco Pro-Am:
Ctr Devoughn Lamont (Marin/Cal State Monterey Bay) had a huge game with 31 pts and 13 rebs, but it wasn't enough to keep South Bay from dropping a 106-89 decision to Bay Pride. PG Aaron Parker (Ohlone/Notre Dame de Namur) had 1 pt coming off the bench for South Bay.
PG Carlton Spencer (Canyons/San Jose State) and SF Marcio Lassiter (CCSF/Cal State Fullerton) both came off the bench for the winners; Spencer had 2 asts while Lassiter had 3 pts in limited action.
