Hank ... for the sake of time, I can't go over all the picks, but I'll go over the top 13 picks. Most of these players I've either seen in person, watched on television, or talked to friends in the business about. Overall, I thought the Padres got a couple of real good values ... but overdrafted at first. Got tremendous value at 4, 5, 11, and 13. The top 3 picks are productive players with little leverage to sign for anything but slot position.

1) SIGNED Khalil Greene, SS, Clemson ... Though I thought there were better players out there and this draft pick had almost as much to do with signability as talent, Greene is a very gifted offensive talent who is a complete package. He has a good approach at the plate and will likely have a high OBP through the professional level. He has good power potential for a middle infielder with a pretty quick bat and will adjust his aggressive approach when the count is not in his favor (he can be a pest at the plate). Defensively, he has good hands, an accurate arm and positions himself well. Unfortunately, he has poor range for a SS prospect.

2) SIGNED<Michael Johnson, 1B/OF, Clemson ... Decent athlete with a nice left handed swing with a lift that should generate power at this level though his power potential is well below Bozied or Nady. He hasn't done it for long, but he arguably outperformed more heralded teammates last year and became the premier 1B in the ACC. He's pretty good defensively. He was considered a late 2nd rounder and went a notch early, but he represents a pretty good 2nd round pick. An improving player who hasn't grasped all he is capable of ... but he started to last year.

3) SIGNED Kennard Jones, CF, Indiana ... A little bit of a reach, but not a huge one (1/2 a round). Great defensive CF with speed, instincts, and a decent arm. He's a gym rat who doesn't have much power potential at all. He has good plate discipline and sprays the ball around. He can also make adjustments.

4) SIGNED Aaron Coonrad, RHP, John Logan JC (Ill) ... Haven't seen him pitch, but know an area scout in the Illinois area that tried to convince his team to draft Coonrad in the 3rd round. He has good velocity on his fastball and a plus changeup with a slider that gets a little big when he overthrows. An imposing physical presence, he is an exciting talent who probably should have been drafted earlier according to scouting friends.

5) SIGNED Sean Thompson, LHP, Thunder Ridge HS (Col) ... Wiry left hander who has average velocity, but a quick arm. He relies on a plus curve, offspeed stuff, and pretty good location. Scouts are undecided where he is ultra-competitive or a punk. He's been described as both.

6) SIGNED John Shorsher, C, San Jose State ... Though Tyler Parker was the significantly better prospect, Shrosher was drafted about where he was expected to be drafted. A good catch and throw guy with power potential. His swing is too long and he needs some work overall on his approach at the plate.

7) Matt Lynch, LHP, Florida State ... Probably the best pitcher on the FSU roster, he has no velocity whatsoever. He is super competitive with good location, but I wonder how he will do against hitters who can tattoo too many pitches which are hittable. Poor velocity and average movement on secondary pitches are a concern. Pretty big reach, but a productive college player.

8) SIGNED Luke Steidlmayer, RHP, Cal Davis ... Tall, angular kid with a little bit of a violent delivery. Curve and slider have potential, but that delivery makes me weary. A little bit of a reach. Seen him play once and he has some tools to work with, but I'm not a fan of what I've seen so far.

9) SIGNED Brian Burgamy, 2B, Wichita State ... Undersized prospect whose scrappy. A reach who is signable. I haven't seen him play enough to make a judgment. I talked to a national cross checker who had him rated as 15-20 round guy.

10) SIGNED Leonard Biernbaum, OF, Florida Atlantic ... Tall guy with a pretty good frame. He has some tools to work with (bat speed) and is a solid line drive hitter. Average defense. Average prospect. Not a bad pick, but uninspired. One of those guys who won't be listed as a prospect immediately, but enough tools to stick around and finally make a name for himself.

11) SIGNED Brandon Wilson, RHP, Okaloosa Walton JC (Fla) ... Was surprised they passed on Anthony Reyes (RHP, USC), but they drafted a kid who has great stuff with their 11th round pick. IMO, he is a better prospect than our 7th-10th picks. Good velocity with even better movement and a loose, easy delivery. His curve is a plus pitch as well, though his changeup is very unrefined. I watched him pitch one time and was really impressed.

12) SIGNED Paul McAnulty, 1B, Long Beach State ... Undersized 1B that I haven't seen play

13) Lance Pendleton, OF/RHP, Kingwood HS (TX) ... Scouts are split between him as an OF and a pitcher. The Padres drafted him as a pitcher. I know of one organization that drafted behind the Padres who was ready to pounce on him as an OF. He is raw as a pitcher, but has good velocity, movement, and a curve with potential. Will need time. I've seen him do both and I personally saw an OF with a nice compact left handed swing, power potential, and good enough athleticism.

14) SIGNED Gabriel Ribas Northwestern, rhp, r/r, 6'4", 210, 02/03/1980

15) SIGNED Rolando Agosto, Union, ss, r/r, 5'9", 165, 01/10/81

20) SIGNED George Kottaras, Connors State, c, l/r, 6'0", 180, 05/10/83

21) Andrew Laroche, Grayson County, ss, r/r, 5'11", 180, 08/13/83 COMMENT: Strong athletic body, reminds of Mark Gruzielanek. Early HS graduate who entered JC for spring semester. Uses whole field at bat. Makes on-line, accurate throws with good carry. Strong runner. Good baseball instincts. Younger son of former big league pitcher Dave LaRoche.

23) SIGNED David Krisch, Cal St Poly, lhp, l/l, 6'7", 205, 05/25/80

24) SIGNED Rusty Moore, Bethune-Cookman, lf, r/r, 6'2", 210, 10/11/80
