OTTAWA (Ticker) -- Daniel Alfredsson scored the go-ahead goal with 5:14 left and Patrick Lalime stopped 26 shots as the Ottawa Senators edged the Phoenix Coyotes, 2-1.
Alfredsson's goal came 75 seconds after the Senators held the Coyotes without a shot throughout a two-minute, 5-on-3 advantage.
Caught with just one defenseman on the ice, the Coyotes failed to cover the area just in front of the net, which is where a wide-open Alfredsson redirected Mike Fisher's shot from the right point between the pads of goaltender Sean Burke.
"Fisher was able to get loose and I was able to tip it in," Alfredsson said. "It was a long shift, everyone was dead tired."
"Obviously, our penalty-kill was key in the third," Lalime said. "The guys gave me every opportunity to see the puck. You don't really think, `Oh no, it's a 5-on-3,' you just say that you have to kill this and then go out and do it."
Lalime turned away all but defenseman Teppo Numminen's power-play tally in the second period to improve to 4-2-0 lifetime against Phoenix. He has stopped 67 of 71 shots in three starts this season.
Ottawa also registered a power-play goal in the middle period.
Marian Hossa took a pass from Martin Havlat at the bottom of the right faceoff circle and unleashed a quick shot. Burke made the save, but Hossa golfed in the rebound from about six inches above the ice to open the scoring 4:02 into the second.
The Coyotes let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers after defensemen Chris Phillips and Curtis Leschyshyn went to the penalty box for Ottawa with 8:19 to play. Midway through the power play, the Coyotes called timeout but still were unable to solve Lalime and the Senators' penalty-killing unit.
Both teams were 1-for-8 on the power play.
"We knew coming in that they were rested and we were tired, but it's still not an excuse for coming up short," said Burke, who has gotten four goals of support in his three losses this season. "When we didn't score on the 5-on-3, I knew the next shift would be big. It was just a little letdown because we know our power play will score big goals for us later on."
"We were trying to be pretty up high and didn't generate any one-timers," added Coyotes coach Bobby Francis. "We had our skill players out there, but the Senators took our options away down low."
Alfredsson, who also set up Hossa's goal, has two goals and two assists in three games.
Numminen's tally came from the right point and tied the game with 9:17 left in the second period.
All three of Ottawa's games this season have been decided by one goal.
